I have had better beers, but for the style, it is perfect. Hoppy nose. Milk chocolate. Fully opaque, black. Tan head. Mostly diminishing. Fine head and lace. Clean, crisp appearance. Nice hoppy mouthfeel,. Smooth, creamy. Some alcohol presence. Is somewhat subdued for 8.1%. It is hard to imagine a better tasting stout. Bear Republic has to, at this point, be recognized for what they are; one of the top 5 brewers in the United States. goz (359), Chelmsford, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Oct 26, 2003 Pours a pitch black, with a large dark tan head that is a bit rocky, mostly lasting, and laces in sheets. Aroma is enormous, with a lot of chocolate, coffee, caramel, and a generous dose of hops. Flavor is equally large - tons of chocolate, middle becomes more coffee like, and ends with a very big and tasty hoppy bitterness. Full bodied, amazingly flavorful and complex - definitely one that needs to be consumed above fridge temp. I'm going to have to do a side-by-side with some Storm King since they are both amazing brews. | 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 20/20 | Dec 3, 2006 Pours an opaque black with a very foamy almond colored head. Aroma of the West Coast! Wonderful Chinook and Cascade aroma! Flavors of roasted malt faintly in the distance. Most obvious flavors of brown sugar and molasses. Very soft texture. Not as oily as most ISs. Very light palate and very warming . May be my favorite Imperial Stout. MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Jun 21, 2002 Updated: May 2, 2003Rerate 5/2/03. Had this rated a 4.4, not quite high enough. Really great stuff. Impressive hoppy finish, very crisp and dry. Loads of subtle roasts, very much enjoy the fact that for an imperial it's got more of a milk chocolate character than coffee or bitter chocolate. Palate is blissfully quaffable, remains very full and rich yet is just gloriously drinkable. Yum. Original rating: Deep black color with a coffee-colored head that dissipates rapidly. Nose is full of caramel, toffee, and coffee. Initially very mild and sweet, follows up with nice roasts and chocolate malts. Rich and creamy. Lovely. Ida7999 (105), Milford, Massachusetts, USA
