Commercial Description:
What do you get when you age an Imperial Stout for 6 months in an old, rye-whiskey, oak barrel? We call it Black Rye. Served cask style, we’re sure you’ll enjoy its robust, roasty heartiness courted by a vanilla-like whiskey undertone that’s sure to put hair on your paws! Cheers!

On tap at PP Strong Ale Festival. Tasted with too many ratebeerians to list. Creamy 1 finger head. Interesting combo of roastiness and hops. Great mellow flavor and a little hop bitterness.

Sampled at the second annual Bistro’s West Coast Barrel Aged Beer Fest: Clear copper brown with a thin, spotty-lacing tan head. Aroma of sweet toasty caramel and bourbon oak with a hint of dark chocolate. Body starts with a light caramely sweetness and some earthy roasty bitterness toward a piny hoppy finish. Nicely balanced and quite drinkable.

This strong, dark black beer has an unmistakable whiskey flavoring (thanks to the cask conditioning). Not for the tame at heart, at 8.2% ABV, this one really warms on the way down. A dark, but thin head tops off this gorgeous beer. Thick and full tasting, this stout does not disappoint.

Lots of peppery spice and rye leading to notes of anise and marzipan. Mildly buttery palate with good mouthfeel, very prominent rye flavors. seems rather soft for a stout. Very peppery lingering finish.

Draft at the Bistro BA Brew Fest 11/11/06; Nose of bourbon and rye bread, with a little spiciness mixed in; Hazy brown with a ring of bubbles around the glass; flavor of bourbon, alcohol and rye in a medium thin body, with an alcohol finish.

Tap @ Bistro in Hayward: Left over from their Barrel aged fest. Black color with not much head. Smoky and malty aroma. Flavors of licorice and spices. The aftertaste is wonderful and sticks around for a while. Yummy!

Tap @ 2007 Strong Ale Fest. Poured a hazy deep brown color with a large creamy tan head. The aroma had strong citrus and pine with the whiskey not as strong as I would have expected, but that is better. The flavor was the same It seemed to have a fair amount of hops, with a rye spicey finish. Caramel also mixed into the finish. Wasn’t bad but I really didn’t realized it was a stout until now.
