| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 7, 2009 Draught @ BTAH. Pours a dark, hazy brown, with a fluffy off-white head that fades fairly quickly. Nose is immensely bright and sweet - tons of sweet citrus, some caramel malt poking through, fruity esters, hints of pine. Taste is sweet up front - combination of caramel malt and sweet citrus moves almost immediately to a big, huge, spicy, fairly piny hop note that just exudes resiny bitterness. Spiciness lends a rye-like character to the malt. So spicy it’s almost prickly. Finish is big and bitter, sits heavily and unapologetically on the palate. Fits well into the category - not quite a barleywine or a DIPA, sits just outside of both categories due more to the way the malt and hops manifest themselves, rather than how much. Aroma is rich and malty with a very bright citrusy/fruity hoppiness over the top. Deep caramel and crystal maltiness. Toasty with a tropical fruity aroma. Very sweet flavour with the rich malts up front followed by lots of rich citrusy hoppiness. Chewy/earthy bitterness on the back. Quite barleywinish. Big, hoppy, and very tasty. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 19, 2008 Tap at the Gate: Pours a deep muddy burgundy color with a dense light tan head. The aroma is piny and hoppy, as well as malty. Thick, chewy dark caramel malt mixes with spruce and grapefruit hop notes. The body is thick and chewy, but it’s never cloying. Huge flavor, in both malt and hop. Piny, resiny, grapefruity, spruce, dark chewy caramel and a long bitter, resiny finish that lingers. A balanced giant that remains drinkable. bb (2919), Martinez, California, USA
