zappafan99 (347), Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA Nov 30, 2008 Taste 11/8 Bottle. Looks: Deep, dark brown body, nice tan foam. Aroma: Toasted and roasted malt. A little smoke. Taste: Medium bodied. Roast/toasted malt with smoke followed by floral and bitter hops. A little sweet and spice too. SuperDave70 (929), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA Nov 29, 2008 Clear sparkling brown pour with a nice lacy foamy head. Roasted nut and malt aroma, along with molasses, coffee and piney hops. Sweet toffee flavor with hints of fruit and spice, followed by an unexpected big hoppy finish. Nice carbonation and smooth on the palate. Surprisingly good. timsilvia32 (286), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Nov 20, 2008 Pretty clear brown pour. Whitish head. Aromas of some roast malt, nut, piney hops. Tastes roast malts with light molasses/tofee. Something a bit metallic maybe, more hops than I would prefer in a brown ale. Lively mouthfeel. Very clean finishing. Overall pretty good, another good brew from Bear Republic. Vas19 (238), Maryland, USA Nov 2, 2008 Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Roasty malt aroma with a bit of coffee and molasses. Initial flavor is very sweet and fruity, almost like sugar coated strawberries, which then moves to a nice roasted nut flavor. Also a hint of cinammon. Alcohol is slightly noticeable. Flavors become more bland as I drink it. Decent. thefederalist (204), Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA Oct 30, 2008 Pours dark reddish brown with a slim, fine cream colored head that diminishes but leaves no lacing in the glass. Aroma is of caramel, roasty, flavors, a bunch of chocolate, and maybe a hint of noble hops. Flavor is sweet, balanced with a little astringent bitterness from the highly kilned malts. Hop flavor is all but absent. Mouthfeel is appropriate for the style. This is a well made beer, though I would argue that it is more of a brown porter, than a brown ale (just going by the BJCP). There is definately some black patent character in here.
