Commercial Description:
This is a hoppy IPA. Did I say hops? Your brewer is a hop head! This is a full bodied beer using American grains. The goal was to create a base for showing off the unique floral qualities of two Pacific Northwest hops, Columbus and Cascade. Columbus is a new hybrid High Alpha Acid hop used mostly for bittering, but used heavily as an aromatic in this strong brew. Cascade is the balance that ties the malt and bittering hops together. It is a true specialty ale and is our brewer’s statement on this style. 2004 L.A. Commercial Brewing Competition, Silver Medal Winner; 2004 World Beer Cup, Silver Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, San Diego, Gold Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, Chicago, Gold Medal Winner; 1999 Great Amercian Beer Festival, Gold Medal Winner - og 1.070, ABV 7.0%, IBU 69. I am addicted to Racer 5. I recently called Bear Republic to arrange for some kegs and I told the lady who works there about my addiction. She replied, "I hear that a lot". Lighter than expected orangish yellow with a nice puff head that lingers and laces. Overwhelming (in a good way) citrus hop aroma. Distinctly grapefruit and a slight pine note. The taste is a lot more hop than malt but both are very apparent. The word that always comes to mind is fresh. It is crisper than you’d imagine a 7% beer to be. This is a bold beer but remarkably drinkable.

Pours orange with a huge billowy head and lots of flocculation. Massive lacing. Aroma is sharp pine notes with a faint caramel backbone. Flavor is PNW hop fruitiness, somewhat balanced by easy caramel and pale hops below. Not terribly complicated or complex, but well-crafted and fairly drinkable.

Bear Republic makes em hoppy! Poured orange/yellow with white head with little lacing. Aroma of grapefruit and pine, more emphasizing the citrus. Smooth on the palate, and full of upfront hop flavor leaving a wonderful bitter aftertaste. Great IPA.

Pours a golden-amber body with off-white legs. Smells of malt, citrus, fresh hops and pine. Flavor is malt, fresh hops, pine, and some citrus. Finish has a nice bitterness.

On tap. Slightly cloudy amber/orange with a tiny white head. Very fruity aroma of pineapple, lemon and even a floral scent. Sweet with a smooth bitter finish. Medium body with a syrupy mouth feel and a slightly dry finish. You really get a fresh dry hop flavor in this one. This is a fantastic beer, one of the best IPA’s I’ve ever had.

On tap at Rattle ’N’ Hum (NYC): Nose is all hops. Truly refreshing. This is the perfect beer after a long workday. Citrus (a little orange, more grapefruit), bitter, and grassy notes... definitely has that bold, earthly flavor throughout.

Pours a relatively light orange/amber, with some cloudiness, decent off-white head that diminishes and stays thin. Good lace. Nose of hops, slight citrus, slight spice. Taste is excellent, notes of citrus initially, then comes bitter with hops, yet finishes smooth. Not extreme, just balanced. I could definitely session an IPA like this.

From Firefly. Rich and hazy copper body under a smallish yet enduring creamy ivory head. Good, snappy hop aroma and likewise was the flavour and mouth. Bitter finish, solid mouth, A quality beer.
