Commercial Description:
This is a hoppy IPA. Did I say hops? Your brewer is a hop head! This is a full bodied beer using American grains. The goal was to create a base for showing off the unique floral qualities of two Pacific Northwest hops, Columbus and Cascade. Columbus is a new hybrid High Alpha Acid hop used mostly for bittering, but used heavily as an aromatic in this strong brew. Cascade is the balance that ties the malt and bittering hops together. It is a true specialty ale and is our brewer’s statement on this style. 2004 L.A. on tap: Aroma is citrussy with some resin, and a soft malt backing. beer poured not quite amber with a slight haze, good head retention and lacing. flavor was citrus, soft malt, resinous and dry. slightly astringent palate with a crispness in the finish. awesome ipa

The aroma is wonderfully hoppy, and clues you in to what’s coming. The hops have a strong presence, but this is actually a well-balanced west coast-style IPA that is very drinkable (if you enjoy hops). Racer 5 manages to be both unusually flavorful, and something that you can drink a few of.

Hazy orange pour with fluffy white head that hangs around for awhile. Noticeable sediment jumping arpund the glass. First smell a little soapy with citrus and orange peel. Ajax dish soap? Ha. Smooth mouthfeel, little sticky, but not as hoppy as i expected. Bargain buy, just didn’t do it for me. Probably past its prime @ my local liquor store...worth a re rate sometime...

My favorite beer style is IPA. I thought there wasn’t any such thing as too hoppy. I may have been wrong, because this IPA is almost too hoppy. (I did say *ALMOST*) Color is a pretty brass tone with a small rapidly dissipating head and very thin lacing. Nose is a potent floral bouquet from all the hops. Hops dominate in the taste to the extent that you taste almost nothing else. The pale malts struggle to get through. This combination of hops with *DARKER* roasted malt than this might be more interesting. Finish is, what else, slap you upside the head with hops!

A beautiful hazy orange/amber brew with a small whitish head that fades away fairly quickly. The aroma is fantastic, clearly a lot of late-addition or possibly dry-hopped Cascade giving it a floral and grapefruit flavor. The hops in the flavor are a little more subdued, not quite as much hop bitterness as I expected from something so clearly hoppy in the nose. Alcohol is hidden, and I think the mouthfeel is a little thin. Smells like heaven though.

Really bitter IPA, but good use of floral hops. Surprisingly smooth and smells wicked nice too.
