Commercial Description:
This is a hoppy IPA. Did I say hops? Your brewer is a hop head! This is a full bodied beer using American grains. The goal was to create a base for showing off the unique floral qualities of two Pacific Northwest hops, Columbus and Cascade. Columbus is a new hybrid High Alpha Acid hop used mostly for bittering, but used heavily as an aromatic in this strong brew. Cascade is the balance that ties the malt and bittering hops together. It is a true specialty ale and is our brewer’s statement on this style. 2004 L.A. Commercial Brewing Competition, Silver Medal Winner; 2004 World Beer Cup, Silver Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, San Diego, Gold Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, Chicago, Gold Medal Winner; 1999 Great Amercian Beer Festival, Gold Medal Winner - og 1.070, ABV 7.0%, IBU 69. California State Fair Bronze Medal, 1997 Beerfest Invitational. - og 1.070, ABV 7.0%, IBU 69.

Pours a hazy gold. An offwhite head with decent lacing. Smells of hops and mild fruits. Had a very significant pine flavor which resulted in a not so unpleasant bitter after taste. Overall a well crafted beer.

Poured a nice golden amber color with medium head. Aroma is very nice, fresh hops and citrus. Tasted pine, grapefruit and finished bitter. I think Bear Republic over did it with the hops and did not balance the beer with proper malt. Not a bad brew but too much pine taste.

Bottle. Nice aroma with hints of straw, hay, and some grains. Head was a bit lacking but color was very nice for IPA. Nice flavor that has a wonderful bitter taste toward the end. Very nice beer and good balance.

(22 oz. bottle from Kappy’s) Lots of hops...Pours slightly cloudy goldish amber. Big puffy, lumpy, foamy off-white head. Aroma of big biting hops, pine and grapefruit and some sweat with some lighter caramel and vanilla underneath. Mouthfeel is nice and smooth, with a nice bit of heft, almost chewy for an IPA. Lots of foamy rings and patches of lacing. Flavor is heavy hops - heavy bitterness with lots grapefruit and pine. Quite biting. Pretty good malt presence as well, with some vanilla and more subtle caramel underneath. Lingering bitter aftertaste. Didn’t really get any fruity or flowery notes. Didn’t realize the ABV was so big in this - this really seems like a big IPA to me.

Pours a palish reddish yellow brown orange with a big whitish fluffy head. The nose is hoppy, downright. Even though this is an older beer. Piney to floral, lots of papaya. Sweeter malt, downright malty. The mouth is creamy and full. Even carbonation, nice viscosity. Big piney resin to floral in the flavor. C-word hops. Solid malt backbone. A bit old, but doesn’t taste terribly past prime. Some alcohol gives this a sharpness. Fine beer, I’ll have to try it fresher in the future. Reminiscent of something between Two Hearted and SNPA.
