Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 2, 2009 In short: A cohesive blend of berries, caramel and pink grapefruits flavours. A little too sweet but overall very good beer.
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed fresh about 1 to 2 months after purchase
The look: Beautiful partly cloudy ruby body topped by a large beige head with medium retention
In long: The nose is rich caramel and plenty of fruity hops, reminiscent of some hoppy American barley wines. Taste has lots of berries swimming in caramel and concludes with a pink grapefruits finish. Not a very complex beer but there is something about that rich fruity caramel and red grapefruits flavours that work surprisingly well together. Slightly tart. Medium carbonation. Bitterness is mild-medium. A little sweetness creeps in (unfortunately) in the after-taste. Not quite balanced enough to me. So much I liked about this beer but it just needed a little more bite in the hops department (more resinous, more pine-cone dryness, something…). Very good but a little twist and it could be excellent. The beer looks great, but looks is not everything, unless you are a chick without much professional ambition. billdrinksbeer (18), Washington DC, USA Nov 1, 2009 Bottle from Rodman’s. Pours a dark red/crimson with a fluffy white head that has quite a bit of retention and lacing. Tons of yeast and other bits floating around. Unfiltered, indeed. Smells sweet, some resinous pine and some prune/plum/cherry action. Watery front, not the kind of malt backbone that I look for in a red ale. Lots of hoppy pine notes though. Lots of carbonation I’d have it again, but I think I prefer Green Flash’s Hop Head Red. alobar (1001), Harleysville, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 25, 2009 Thanks to qmeister. Pours a thick reddish amber color with a slightly tan head. Aroam of caramel, malts, and hops. Flavor of caramel, malts, and a solid hops bitterness at the back end. Lots of floaties. Creamy mouth feel. douglas88 (1542), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Oct 25, 2009 22 ounce bottle at the Bayou. Pours a dark amber color with a medium tan head. The aroma is huge caramel, malty and light fruit. The flavor was really nice; sweet caramel, light fruitiness, rich malts, a light bitter hop. Nice and tasty. jdskinns (15), South Roxana, Illinois, USA Oct 22, 2009 12oz bottle. Poured cloudy, reddish brown in color. Thing white head, good carbonation. Smelled heavily of malts, sweet. Taste was pretty average. Bitter, maltiness, and dark fruits. This was a beer I’ve been wanting to try for a while and it was a bit disappointing for me. With the appearance and smell I was looking for more taste than I got. Pretty light on the mouthfeel as well, another thing I was wanting more out of.
larryLSB (139), La Selva Beach, California, USA Oct 19, 2009 Poured from 12 oz, Thought I had already rated this, as it was of my all time favorites. Dark brown with nice red hue. Medium tan head. Malty caramel nose with a bit of fruit. Hoppy bitter taste, sweet and malty. Well balanced brewn with a nice aftertaste with a strong finish. Prometheus (97), Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA Oct 17, 2009 Very strong red ale.
Very hoppy in aroma and taste.
Red in color.
Pine, hops, caramel.
Medium body.
Not a bad finish. Not too bitter. bsjay (54), Oregon, USA Oct 15, 2009 First complaint, which has nothing to do with the specific beer, is that the 12 oz bottle had a shockingly small amount of beer (you could pour enough to go at least a quarter way up the neck). That said, I love hoppy reds, and this was a decent example of the style, but perhaps not hoppy enough for me.
