Commercial Description:
The brew of choice for mountain bikers, and adventurous types worldwide. (Are you excited now!) This fiery red ale is not for the weak at heart. It originally started out as a Scottish red ale but has taken on flavors of its own. This is a very complex recipe using five different grains to achieve it's unique flavor. The caramel malt used is a mixture of Belgian Caravienne and Hugh Bairds Crystal malts. Red Rocket is a full bodied, hoppy brew which finishes on the pallet with caramel malts. Centennial and Cascade hops are used for bittering and aroma.2004 L.A. Pours an opaque deep amber colour with a sudsy, frothy tan head that has moderate retention and spotty lacing. The aroma is rich with pine, caramel, grapefruit citrus and vinous malts. There is also a peppery overtone accompanying the nose. Initially, the flavour is dominated with bright citric notes and toffee sweetness. The aftertaste though brings out a spicy bite that is reminiscent of rye malt. The finish is dry, roasty and somewhat coffee-like. The palate is medium bodied and sticky in texture, especially in the finish.

Bottle courtesy Maltjoe. Pours a thick copper brown with a thick creamy head. Citrus hops and a touch of caramel aroma. Taste is big and hoppy, lots of bitter citrus and pine with a nice thick malt body and a touch of spiciness. I like the balance of hop and darker malts, very well done.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass for drinking. The beer had a strong caramel malt aroma with some fruit and toffee undertones. There was also a hop presence, heavily focused on pine with some grain too. It had a somewhat cloudy dark copper-amber color with an average-sized foamy tan head that had shorter retention and moderate cling. The beer had a sweet caramel malt flavor with some underlying grainy bitterness, and only a touch of sour character. A wet, drinkable beer that was smooth, but very lively with its carbonation and full on the palate. A solid ale that fit its style well.

Clear dark copper pour, moderate beige head with good retention and complex lacing. Nose of piney hops, plums, figs, and tea leaves; Flavour is dominated by American hops throughout with a long, peppery finish. Mouthfeel is relatively light with sparkling carbo, all round another excellent offering from Bear Republic.

12oz bottle. Very tasty indeed. These guys really brew good beer. This is perhaps the darkest red ale I have seen yet and a great tasting one at that.

Great color....deep red brown with a creamy head. Aroma has hints of hops (pine, resin) and caramel, toffee and roasted malts. Flavor is definitely in-your-face...roasted malt, burnt caramel, toffee, hoppy resin and a bitter finish that takes your by surprise. This beer is most certainly a bastard...and a tasty one.

Pours from the bottle to a brownish hue with hints of ruby and a medium thick off-white head that lasts awhile and leaves okay lacing. Immediately out of the bottle is a strong nose of malty dark druit infused nicely with hops, and as the beer warms, it is joined by the scent of the alcohol. Mouthfeel is tingly and full and the taste is even a more pronounced malty fruit blended with hops, with hints of nuts, caramel and again, the alcohol. Finish is long, full and somewhat bitter. A darn good beer.

Poured reddish brown with a white head. Aroma of citrus. More hoppy than malty. Some caramel.
