Commercial Description:
The brew of choice for mountain bikers, and adventurous types worldwide. (Are you excited now!) This fiery red ale is not for the weak at heart. It originally started out as a Scottish red ale but has taken on flavors of its own. This is a very complex recipe using five different grains to achieve it's unique flavor. The caramel malt used is a mixture of Belgian Caravienne and Hugh Bairds Crystal malts. Red Rocket is a full bodied, hoppy brew which finishes on the pallet with caramel malts. Centennial and Cascade hops are used for bittering and aroma.2004 L.A. Orangey caramel nose. Amber reddish color with a thick frothy head that lasts forever. Huge malty toffee sweetness, but excellently balanced with sharp bitterness. Full body, big carbonation, smooth finish. This was a fantastic huge malty beer with great balance!

22 oz bottle. Very bready, pumpernickel like flavor with strong resiny hop bite at the finish. I detected some sweetness as it warmed. I can appreciate this as an innovative brew, but I found the taste a bit harsh and aggressive, like their Racer 5 IPA which I’m not a big fan of either.

Pours a deep, red-hued amber with a solid fluff of tan-brown head. Aroma is an appealing balance of PNW hops and grains with emphasis on chewy caramel, along with cotton candy and a touch of smoke. Medium bodied, with alcohol imperceptible. Malt, caramel and hops wash over the palate. Bitter-sweet finish. Agressively hopped. Chocolate malt flavors develop after the beer warms and aerates. Good stuff!

Pours a dark copper brown with a tall, frothy beige head. Wonderful malt spectrum aroma, sweet sugary creamy caramel with subtle underlying hop scents. I love the play of the hops against the heavy upfront malts. The caramel creamy flavor at first blends instantaneously with the bitter hop finish. Hops bite just a little but give a nice herbal balance. Very tasty.

Bomber. Pours nice amber with malty citrus aromas. Great hop flavor and full bodied. They never cease to amaze me as I’ve had this one many a time. One of the best.

Pours brown red with a thick tan head. Nice citrus hop and caramel malt aroma. Flavor is more of those nice hops with a great malty background. Nice mouthfeel. Very nice beer.

The bottle conditioning here works beautifully. The hoppiest red ale I’ve ever had. California- we love you!

I appreciate the history - this is where they got their start, and all that jazz, but I’m just blown away with their other offerings to think that this is the beer that they are known for. Its tasty, and packs a wonderful punch for a red ale, but it’s just not my thing. Funny that I never tried it until I was actually at the brewery...
