Not much hops on the tongue. Mostly sweet malt. Kind of hard to pin down the flavor, still not sure how I really fell about it WISEGUY572 (1246), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 14, 2008 I was not sure what to make of this, and the description provided by the brewer sets up false expectations. Nothing about this is a Scottish ale. It is a nice uniquely American hoppy red ale. Usual description for a red ... sweet caramel malts. Usual description for an American hopped ale ... pine needles, orange peel, grapefruit. Usual description for a red, hazy red, good head. But a Scottish ale, hopped to hell at 65+ IBU? I don’t think so! I like it. I probably would have rated it higher if they had simply said well hopped American red. scoobysnak (249), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 5, 2008 Smell is hoppy with a sweet citrus notes that get overcome by the pine aromas. Ruby red with a nice foamy cloud like head that sticks around for quite a while. Taste is predictably hoppy less of the citrus taste than I was expecting based on the smell, it is definately more inclined to the piney notes... A good beer but nothing too spectacular. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 3, 2008 Poured a glowing murky red color with medium head. Aroma malty with nice balance of hops. Taste - caramel malt on palate along with cascade hops on lips. I really liked this brew, reminds me of Rogues St. Rogue Red Ale. A definite winner !!! keepersj12 (800), Sicklerville, New Jersey, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 3, 2008 This is hard to pin down. The bottle says a hopped up Scottish Red which makes sense. The sweet malt hits first followed by the dry bitter hops. Nice balance of a complex beer. Looks great and smells great too. csbosox (1081), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 1, 2008 I shared a bottle of this a while back with tjthresh. I am not sure if I rated it and didn’t ever enter it or if I just didn’t bother. 22oz bottle bought right here on the KS side of the metro. Served in a smokestack chalice. A fair amount of sweet caramelly malt and fragrant, piney hops are present in the aroma, along with a little chocolate. Big bodied, but nicely balanced at the end. The flavor is more malt-centric at first, showcasing the caramelly malts, but is quickly followed by piney and earthy hops that bring a nice amount of bitterness. The finish is lingering bitterness. It is good, but it just seems like a little bit much of everything, sometimes I like the hops to shine and sometimes I like the malt to shine. stchloe (492), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jul 31, 2008 A pretty damn good red. Creamy head, red hops with a solid IBU, goes down quick. Shows how a mix of European and Continental hops is a marriage of love. beermaniac (86), Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jul 29, 2008 Aroma: Low levels of dark malt with some sweetness,fruity and earthy hop notes.
Appearance: Good clarity, darker red color with ok head retention and lacing
Flavor: Sweet maltiness with pervading earthy hop flavor, finishes with substantial hop bitterness
Palate: Medium bodied, bitterness is high, chalky finish
Overall Impression: Tastes like an aged IPA. Not malty enough for a Scotch Ale, not hoppy enough for an IPA (bitterness is there, needs more hop flavor/aroma). Ok beer with nothing that stands our, not particularly memorable
