Mildly sweet malt with a peppery back. A proper ale, can certainly see the Scotch Ale influence. yinzerbeernut (55), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 4, 2009 Deep, rich mahogany on pour with a pillowy off white to tan head that has staying power. The lace clings to the glass like the morning frost on the windows. Very complex notes of cherry, red berry, malt, and tobacco appeal to the olfactory system. I’m going to say medium bodied with a creamy start and hoppy/slightly bitter finish. It leaves me short of calling it balanced. Being only familiar with Racer 5, I can confidently say I will be searching out other Bear Republic concoctions. TheGB (41), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 2, 2009 12oz bottle. Lovely mahogany color with dense and fluffy tan head that leaves lots of lacy bits on the glass, bright and rich aroma like a grapefruit drenched in molasses, flavor is pretty light with plenty of hoppy citrusy notes and some cinnamon and cardamom, finishes with some nice bitterness but not as smooth and balanced on the end as I would like. Very tasty and refreshing, light on the palate but with a nice depth of flavor. gsteph (264), knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 29, 2009 Deep reddish, brown pour. Darker towards the middle with a two-finger, off-white pillowy head. Very sticky lace and tons of floaties. Sweet nose....caramel, brown sugar, grapefruit and orange peels. Great, almost familiar, flavor. Similar to a 90 minute. Molasses, candied grapefruit, chocolate covered oranges and a sappy herbalness to boot. Crystal malt shines here as it finishes moderately sweet with a lingering bitterness. Very smooth and creamy...another solid concoction. I’m not sure if it’s an Am. Strong though. Seems more like a dark IPA or a toned down BW. Nonetheless, good stuff. CapFlu (3483), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 24, 2009 Bottle. Deep, dark reddish brown, with a fine tall off-white head. Super hop aroma, very fruity, with a slight amber malt background. Citrus and a bit of bubblegum as well. Round malt flavor, very rich and smooth, with dark fruits, caramel, chocolate; slightly chewy and grainy. Amazingly hopped. Rich, deep, complex malts. Very big flavor all around. Long, almost burning hop finish, with fruit and slightly roasted grains. Fantastic. Might even get better with age… Bov (5451), Bienne, Switzerland
