Commercial Description:
The brew of choice for mountain bikers, and adventurous types worldwide. (Are you excited now!) This fiery red ale is not for the weak at heart. It originally started out as a Scottish red ale but has taken on flavors of its own. This is a very complex recipe using five different grains to achieve it's unique flavor. The caramel malt used is a mixture of Belgian Caravienne and Hugh Bairds Crystal malts. Red Rocket is a full bodied, hoppy brew which finishes on the pallet with caramel malts. Centennial and Cascade hops are used for bittering and aroma.2004 L.A. 650 ml bottle from local liquor store. Pours a translucent dark brown-red color with a beige head that left plenty of lacing as it dissipated. The aroma was medium in strength and had notes of sweet malts and some citrus. The flavor is reminiscent of a pale ale, biter hops take center stage, with malts and apricots rounding out the sides. The mouthfeel is full and silky. The finish features more biter hops. This beer went extremely well leftover open-faced turkey sandwiches, gravy and candied yams. Overall: Very good--Recommended.

12oz bottle part of world market 10 pack sampler... this is the first one I tried out of the sampler because Id heard so many good things about it.. Like an umbrella on a rainy day, this was just what I needed... pours a DEEP amber red with a nice frothy head upon arrival.. The punch of distinctive piney hops with a malty overtone.. Initial hit to the palate is a subtle explosion of toffee and spice malts.. not overpowering, very very smooth and leaves an inviting aftertaste on my palate.. good, no... great from start to finish the balance of hoppiness to malt is perfected in this ale.. maybe a little light on bite for an american strong ale, but still well worth it.. Damn good brew.. incredibly smooth given the abv.. wow!

Bottle. Nice dark red, opaque color with rich, creamy head. Beautiful beer with fantastic balance of complex malt and citrusy hops. Very surprised at how good this beer is. Balance is so good that the IBU and ABV numbers are hard to believe. Fantastic beer.

With a BBQ chicken club at Porter’s Pub, UCSD. Salty and hoppy on the nose. Seems it would make a good harbor/sea beer. There are no alien flavors in this brew. Good 80/20 hop-malt balance. A solid specimen. However, I would classify it more as an IPA rather than a strong ale.

Tap. Aroma starts with moderate malt notes of roasted and caramel, pine and orange peel for the hops and light broth for the yeast with wood, pepper and toffee in the backgound. Head is smallish, white, creamy with some large bubbles mixed in and the lacing coated the glass better tha 50%. Color is a dark red/brown. Flavor starts lightly sweet and acidic then finishes moderately acidic and heavily bitter. Palate is medium, watery, has a lively carbonation and finishes a little astringent and lightly dry. Both a full and well balanced American strong.

Bomber pours a nice clear amber with big tan head due to the bottle conditioning and decent lacing. The aroma has dry roasted malts, mild caramelization, a hint of earthiness and very little hop presence. I think it’s a pine hop note. The taste begins aggressive with pine hop bitterness and dry nearly astringent roasted malts. The flavor becomes more sweet and rich with malts as the midway point is reached. I get caramel malts more roasted malts and also mixed in there is a nice peaty earthiness. This is an aggressive flavored beer. It would be interesting to let this age a year or so and try again.

Bottle via trade with lb4lb. Lots of spicy and dry hops on the nose. A hint of rye like spice as well. Some malty and brown sugar sweetness as well. Pours rich copper/amber with a nice creamy tan head leaving excellent lacing. Flavor is balanced bitterness and maltiness. The dry hops and creamy malt work well with each other without any one dominating. Medium to full bodied. Nice!
