tupalev (2311), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 8, 2008 Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, Garthicus, and Blankboy, courtesy of Harry. Pitch blacker than night black, very dark brown head. Strong aroma - roast, alcohol, chocolate, and more alcohol. Taste - wow, intense alcohol, fading to a lovely roast. Some chocolate notes as well. Intense, and good stand to mellow out a bit, but good!
KimJohansen (4294), Copenhagen V, Denmark Oct 8, 2008 Black with rather large deep beige head. Not that sweet aroma with plenty of hard roasted malt, coffee and chocolate notes. Flavour has hard roasted malt, dark bitter chocolate and hops that gives it a bitter finish. Like it for not beeing cloying sweet. Guerde (491), Welcome, Minnesota, USA Oct 5, 2008 (bottle, thanks Sparky27!) Pours out jet black with a light tan head that retains nicely. Aroma is a blend of mostly piney hops, (although a light grapefruit peel is detected), and cocoa, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and dark roasted coffee. The taste is very chocolate-forward to begin with, but changes to dark roasted coffee near the finish. The finish is still somewhat bitter and dry from the abundant hops. The mouthfeel is very smooth and full. I remember having this beer at a previous tasting, and found it to be rather harsh and abrasive. This was an aged bottle, so the flavors seem to have mellowed and meshed, which makes it far more enjoyable. timsilvia32 (249), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Oct 3, 2008 Black/dark brown pour. Dark cream head that remained for quite a while. Lacing throughout the beer. Burnt and roast malts, baker chocolate aromas. Almost creamy mouthfeel, but enough bittering coffee and hops to keep it a bit more lively than creamy. Tastes similarly with very roasty malt and coffee. Some chocolate and very little dark fruit and charcoal. Quite full bodied. Alcohol very well hidden. Very good example of the style, wihtout add ons like barrel aging. BMan1113VR (911), Los Angeles (and Dallas, TX), California, USA Sep 30, 2008 Bottle thanks to zathrus13. Pours a thick black with a creamy light brown head that leaves lots of lacing. Aroma of strong alcohol, chocolate, vanilla some wood and more alcohol. Taste is coffee, alcohol, and wood. Syrupy mouthfeel lots of alcohol on the palate with light bubbles. Should age well. caesar (2573), Bunnik/Utrecht, Netherlands Sep 24, 2008 Bottled. Poured a dark color with a huge frothy brownish head. Aroma is heavily malted, roasted, some hop, coffee, licorice. Quite strong and thick in aroma. Very thick taste, huge amount of malts, licorice, slight bitter. Some alcohol burn in the finish. Very strong and powerful....and I like it!
