Orange pour with an off white head. Aroma of musty malt and earthy hops. Flavors of burnt caramel malt and weak hops. Medium body, boozey/burnt with a boozey finish. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Apr 12, 2008 22 oz. bottle courtesy of Jake65. Pours a clear amber with a moderate linen white head that lasted through the first few sips and left some dots of lace on the glass. Pleasant aroma of fruity hops with a bit of pine and some malt. You know this one is going to be hoppy. The first sip and, gee what a surprise, lots of hops. Some light malt is also present in the flavor, but clearly this beer is about the hops. Bitter, lingering finish. Lacks the smoothness and texture I think of in a barley wine. If you want to make an IIPA, then please make an IIPA and call it such. KAF (441), Coralville, Iowa, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Apr 12, 2008 Bottle thanks to Skyview. I think I would call this an imperial ipa before I called it a barley wine. Amber pour with little head. Malt and again a piney hop flavor. Still not sure why this is called a barley wine. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 11, 2008 Picked up a single 22-oz bomber from LiquidSolutions.biz. Pours a semi-hazed cooper amber brew with an average sized off-white head that slowly dissipates to a fine film top. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, some vanilla a touch of orange zest, and a touch of cardboard. Taste is light to medium bodied with a thin carbonation and flavors of semi-dry caramel malt, a touch of raisin and some flowery hops. Finish is slightly dry with a mild bitterness and sweet malt aftertaste. Could use a year of aging to smoothen out. MatSciGuy (641), Rosemount, Minnesota, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Apr 10, 2008 [bottle] shared by skyview. Poured deep amber with little to no head. Aroma dominated by hops. Tasted like an overbalanced double IPA. Lots of malt with a dry hoppy finish. badgerben (3610), Blaine, Minnesota, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 10, 2008 Another thanks to Skyview. Copper color with no head. Very dry hop aroma. I could almost smell the acids. The taste is very light... some vegetal hops, a bit of citrus and watery malt. Everyone else at the tasting said this tasted more like a IIPA; it tasted more like an Amber Ale to me.
