On tap: The nose showed some smoke, anise and day-old coffee. The palate was rather thin and watery without much depth or concentration. Being an oatmeal stout I would have hoped for a more creamy mid-palate.

4/20/2008: Beer Works Oatmeal Stout is darkish brown (not quite as dark or opaque as the porter) with a frothy tan head. The flavor is roasty with some weak chocolate and coffee notes comibined with a plain, creamy oatmeal-like quality. The beer has a medium to body and a smooth texture. The finish has butterscotch and is mineral-like. Not bad, but not that great. I preferred the porter a bit more...

Draught at Beer Works (Fenway) in Boston, MA. Rating #39 for this beer...

Looks good, but thinner-bodied than it should be. Lacks the strong chocolate/oatmeal flavors I was hoping for. Look elsewhere for a good sweet stout.

On tap at the Fenway location. Dark brown with a nice tan head. Best head retention of any of the Beer Works beers I had. Aroma has a little chocolate, roasted malts. Flavor is similar to aroma. Slightly creamy and smooth mouthfeel and finish.

Had this one on draught at the brewpub on Canal Street, Boston, Massachusetts. Oily dark brown pour with a decent sized tan head, plenty of bitter chocolate and coffee in the nose, roasted caramel and peanuts, cherries and plums throughout. Sweet and buttery finish. This is an excellent sweet stout.

POurs deep brown with a medium head. Aromas of chocolate and coffee show on the nose. The palate gives a medium body that shows the nice toasted notes. A light finish.l

Tap @ Salem Beer Works as "Black Bat Stout." Pours opaque blackish brown with a thin, light tan head. Faint aroma of chocolate. Light body that goes a bit watery. Almost no carbonation. A hint of brown sugar in an almost vacant taste that finishes in burnt toast with a sour edge. These guys should rethink the recipe for this one or just walk away from it.
