Tap @ Salem Beer Works. Pours jet black with a tan head far too watery for the style. Aroma is coffee, roasted malt, and slight oatmeal. Flavor...well, sadly not too much to report here. The roasted malt and coffee notes you get are good, but the beer overall is far too watery and weak for the style.

Sample at Beer Works Fenway: This beer is a very dark brown color (almost black) but not completely opaque. Medium thin light tan head that dissipates slowly and rings of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Medium body with a coffee and chocolate character. Light hops and malt are present too. The finish is roasty with a coffee finish that is ultimately short-lived. Another slightly above average offering from Beer Works.

Black, creamy tan head. Nose held notes of soft coffee, toasted chocolate, and cream. Well roasted flavors of all the above with more mild toasted coffee and chocolate notes. Light bodied, soft carbonation, dry finish. Sessionable I guess, but nothing worth seeking out...

On tap at the Salem location. Pours a deeper brown with lots of ruby highlights and a medium tan bubbly/creamy lacing head. Aroma was kidn of light with some roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. Flavor of roasted malts, some coffee and bitter chocolate. This one had some hop flavor buried under all the roasty sweet malts which I enjoyed.

Draught at the brewpub. Opaque brownish black with a tan head that laced the glass. Smelled of chocolate and light roast. delicate sweetness on the tongue. Full bodied with chocolate and light cream flavors. Yum.
