Commercial Description:
Alt-bier originates from Dusseldorf, and is the German version of a pale ale, with deep amber color and a very malty flavor. Brewed with German malts to provide its signature rich toasted malt flavor, it is lightly hopped with German & American hops.

This beer pours medium amber. It sgows notes of nuts and malt on the nose. The palate shows some deeper hints of toasted malt with a slight sweet finish.

Tap at Salem Beer Works. Pours a clear dark amber with an off-white head. Light, nutty aroma. Medium-to-light body and light carbonation. Starts sweet, almost chewy, with nuts and a bit of fruit, and fades to a spicy dry finish.

Draught at brewpub. Clear copper body with a small off-white head. Very basic harmless caramelized malts. Flavours of all-bran cereals mixed with breakfast berries jam and some wood. Woody hops with almost no bitterness. Short finish leaving only light fruity after-taste. Nothing offensive with it, just very basic and not very tasty. I usually find Altbiers to be very fine session beers but this Beer Works is a beer that needs more work.

Deep brown-amber beer with a thick white head. Aroma is quite interesting, minerally with a herbal hop character. A bit of light smokiness as well. Faint cherry and toast and also an earthy resinousness in the nose. Flavour is a bit more straightforward. Cherry fruit, bracing minerally dryness and a faint hint of smoke again. Flavour is well-balanced by noble/herbal hop character. Moderate bitterness with light toast and sweet berryish esters throughout.

Dark brown beer, with a nice off-white head. Gently malted aroma - somewhat sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. The flavor is very pleasant and easy to drink. Nice clean finish.

Tap at the Canal Street location - a very nice Alt - dark red with a slight brown tint, and a fabulous, foamy head - just a mild sweetness on it, with a very pleasant dry character, which is great, since so many alts tend to lean toward the sweet end of the spectrum these days - lingering toasty/roasty, crisp bitterness - I like.
