badgerben (2990), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Apr 12, 2008 Barley Wine #100. I definitely can’t thank BDR enough for this one! Black color with a large head. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla and a little fruitiness. Dark and sweet malt flavor. Moderate bourbon, vanilla, oak. A bit of chocolate and coffee. Almost tastes closer to a stout than a barley wine. Delicious.
KingpinIPA (804), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jul 18, 2008 Bottle via dchmela. Dark, reddish, purple color. Smell of dark fruit, caramel, vanilla, oak, bourbon, alcohol, malt, brown sugar, nuts and hops. Taste of bourbon, oak, caramel, prunes, hops, vanilla, alcohol, raisins, touch of chocolate and nuts. Wonderful brew. I wish I had a bigger bottle. heemer77 (3609), North Liberty, Iowa, USA Jul 17, 2008 Black body with a medium tan head. The aroma has some tobacco and oak. Some hints of pears and caramel. The taste is fairly sweet with caramel and some leather. There is also a little bit of pears and some notes of vanilla. A nice woody note helps to make this interesting. A good beer, but far from mind blowing. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 17, 2008 Bottle gushed all over my lap. Deep mahogany in color with a tan, foamy head. Stringy lacing. Lots of vanilla and alcohol, mostly bourbon. Toffee or caramel come out in the malts. Bitter and a bit acrid from the alcohol. There is a big note of brown sugar that comes out in the flavor. Raisins mix in with the vanilla. Creamy, and full bodied with a finish that is just as complex as the rest of the beer. Delicious. hrking (24), Muncie, Indiana, USA Jul 10, 2008 Wow all I can say is that I have a new favorite beer. This beer is incredible. Me being a fan of bourbon beers from the get go this beer does not dissapoint. Oak,Bourbon,Vanilla,Carmel, all rolled into the smoothest palette drinkable beer i’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting. With that said i’ve never given a perfect 5 but this beer is totally worthy. All the flavors blend together so smoothly and perfectly that I recommend to anyone trying this rare treat at least once and deciding for themselves. But as for me this beer sits atop the throne! RollinHard (502), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Jul 10, 2008 Thanks to MYSELF for getting a few of these!! Dark brown Belgiany looking pour with a big tan head. Head lasts to the very bottom of the glass too. Aroma’s all over the map with notes of vanilla, raisins, chocolate (milk and dark both come to mind), strong oak, caramel and toffee. Seemed a slightly mild aroma when I first had it, but the second time I had it, it smelled fantastic. Flavor is equally demanding; bitter dark chocolate, raisins, strong oak mixing with sweet bourbon, vanilla and a woodlike bitterness. Quite sweet, but it’s too complex to call "sugary." Finish dries things out with a bitter buttery hop flavor, lingering toasted wood, bourbon, and bitter raisin/dark fruit. Wonderful aftertaste goes on and on. High Belgian-esque carbonation makes this drinkable and easy going, but it’s got a full body and TONS of flavor. I expected this to be good and man, this is a wondeful beer! Sweet enough to suit me and a complex flavor worth pondering and enjoying. I know the ratings for this have been going down, but I think this deserves to be in the top still. Lovely lovely beer.
