As soon as I opened the bottle I could smell burbon. I also smell brown sugar and cinnamon. LOVE the aroma. Has a very wine like mouth feel. This beer has alot of spices in the flavor. It almost even has a red wine taste. Does not have a real bite like other barley wines. This is very good. Love the oak flavor. Probably the best barley that no one has heard of. And it better be for 13.00 dollars a bottle. harlequinn (2745), Tacoma, Washington, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 25, 2003 A very nice barleywine, a little liter than I care for them to be, but quite enjoyable and nicely complex. The aroma is very woody and the taste is somewhat like a fine cognac. The taste is very earthy and has nice hints of vanilla, the bite of alchohol in the aftertaste, but very warming like drinking bourbon. A little pricey, but when you drink it you definitely know where you money went. hopscotch (5487), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 10, 2004 Murky, caramel colored ale with a small, sudsy, off-white head. The nose is perfect... probably one of the greatest things I have ever smelled. Huge butterscotch and vanilla notes along with plenty of caramel and sourmash whiskey. The malts stand apart and above the whiskey notes; this is unusual in my experience with bourbon barrel aged beers. Excellently balanced flavor. Notes of butterscotch, toffee, white wine, alcohol and lemon rind. A bit thin for a barley wine, but medium-bodied with an astringent mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Short, dry, tart finish with a shot of bourbon in the end. I cannot emphasize enough how much I love the aroma of this beer! Thanks to brewbandit for the bottle! Drink up! | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 25, 2001 Very much an English barleywine, with a smooth, rounded, well-balanced flavor and body. The oak, vanilla, and bourbon flavors are there in abundance, but seem more to permeate the beer than to dominate it. Faintly smokey flavor really pushes this into the stratosphere of the really great barleywines, up there with the offerings from Hale’s, Full Sail and Eldridge Pope. Top shelf all the way. This super-deluxe ale comes only in 1 quart, 2 oz mega bottles: the perfect size to get one completely snookered, given the massive ABV. Drinking this slowly over the course of Christmas Day: beautiful.

Dark ruby pour with brown edges, a booming tan head generates thick lacing, looks great. Sweet aroma, wrought with notes of bourbon, sweet caramel malts, oak, vanilla, nuts, tropical fruits, butterscotch and toffee. The bourbon aroma is huge, but screams of high quality. A vinous character is just a prelude of complexity, of a huge beer that begs me to swallow it all away before I can thoroughly evaluate its many flavors. Taste is magnificent, certainly too much bourbon for some, not for me. More fruit and oak, followed by alcohol that is both warming and compliments the overall profile. Additions include smoke and a cognac character. Palate is very smooth, medium to full bodied, luxurious. The finish is medium in length, with a drilling dose of bourbon and mellowing alcohol warmth kicking in on the backside. This is a very well done example of a style that has not grown tiresome to my palate yet. The price, though high, is irrelevant here, as every aspect of this beer right down to the beautiful packaging is very pleasing aesthetically and satisfying to almost no end in all four evaluated categories. brewbandit (312), Marietta, Georgia, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 4, 2003 A nice amber caramel color with light head. Aromas of oak, vanilla. Body was surprising lighter than expected. Light oak flavor with caramelness. A nice easy drinking barleywine and one I look forward to trying again with some age on it! beerguy101 (3940), Newark, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 23, 2003 Dark brown color, slightly hazy. Medium head. Aroma is malty, woody and smoky with a hint of vanilla. A medium to full bodied barleywine. Malts are fruity and slightly sweet. Hops are slightly spicy. There is a lot going on in this very complex beer. The oak and bourbon flavors are competing and complementing with the vanilla and fruit. Then there is the smoky flavor that sort of hangs out in the background, hiding in the shadows only to dart out and dazzle you. The 9.75% alcohol will sneak up on you. It extremely well hidden, and I’m glad this beer comes with a swing top type closer. Drinking all 38 oz of this stuff in one sitting would knock me on my ass. It’s very smooth. A very easily drinkable barley wine. Recommended. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. . Nice etched beer bottle.
