Bottle: Pastuerised.
A refreshing example of an India Pale Ale from the master brewers at Belhaven. Such a nice IPA. I haven’t enjoyed one this much from start to finish since AleSmith. And that’s saying a lot.

Look is a big and cloudy dark orange. No clarity whatsoever in the thicker spots. Big puffy head. Looks thick and substantial. Sweet aroma is more reminiscent of a white wine than a beer. Sweet white grape aroma. Pleasant, but not much like a beer. Heavy floral, wine-like scent. Truly aromatic. Has a very smoky, steamed first flavor. An ale undertone. Mildly bitter woody (tree bark) hops. Smokyness remains. Really interesting, though to me it’s more of a Rauchbier than an IPA. Medium thickness in the mouth. Wet and smooth but has a tiny sticking thickness. Ashy as it warms. It’s a loverly, sweet beer. White wine with a smoky overlay. Really nice indeed.

Draft: Apple and grain aroma. Clear golden with a medium white head. Flavor of apple core. generic bitter finish. Moer character than I would expect from a bitter, but a far cry from an IPA.

Taste and aroma are pretty nice with decent hops, but the aftertaste is so offensive that it killed it for me.

Golden amber with white head. Floral, citrus, and sweet malt aromas. Hop citrus and mild malt honey-caramel flavours. Balanced, refreshing, and sessionable ale.

Bottle. Lots of malt in the aroma with some hops, but smells more of a bitter/amber to me. Floral hops are noticeable and caramel malt. Flavor is grassy and malty...not what I would call a very good IPA...but also not horrible either. Just ok.

Location: 500 ml bottle from State Line, 9/1/09

Aroma: Mellow floral hops, caramel malts, some mild fruit, and just a touch of soapiness that keeps it from being better
Appearance: Nice hazy orange color, fizzy white head, spotty lacing
Flavor: Hop bitterness throughout, with some caramel malts in the backing, an odd herbal quality as well, grassy finish
Palate: Medium body, oily, fizzy
Overall Impression: I thought this beer was alright, but I just found it to be a touch off, the soapiness of the nose bothered me a bit, and found the flavor to be a touch flawed as well. Maybe this wasn’t fresh enough? I don’t know, but although it wasn’t a bad beer by any means, I won’t be running out for this one again.
