JPDIPSO (4323), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Oct 10, 2005 Rich near black body with a hint of orange through the liquid as it is poured. Dense light brown head that settle ot a thin lid and lots of lace on the sides of the glass. My second bottle and and the nose seems different this time, but its just likely the expectation vs. knowledge type thing. Heavy hops pulse through the nose. Grapefruit, lavender, stewed prunes and a touch of alcohol in the aroma(9-). I am catching qualities of Anchor OSA and HotD Adam. Thick and smooth feel that is a touch too thick in the end. Flavors of pine and juniper with a mild citric flare. Lightly sweet, with light caramel, blackberries and sweet licorice. Finish is quite bitter and slightly prickly. Linger has a rich espresso and mildly burnt malt quality. The balance is quite adequate at this time to be drinkable, but I can see the hops mellowing and the malt complexities increasing expediently in the future. A few of these will be forgotten about in the rear of my beer cabinet.
antisnobJP (271), St. Michael, Minnesota, USA Oct 22, 2008 Bottle. Had first one almost 3 years ago, and last one now. I remember the first one taking an hour to drink. I spilled a drop on my sock and the spot never completely faded in the wash in two years. That should tell you all you need to know about the depth of blackness in both color and flavor of this beer. Intensely flavored and mind-numbingly viscous. Actually feels like you are drinking evil. Good evil. cgarvieuk (2598), Edinburgh, Scotland Oct 16, 2008 Bottle at home ...
Thanks to one of my traders for this ... sorry i kept forgetting who ... WOW this is a Stout.!!!! ... PilsnerPeter (1591), Flushing, New York, USA Oct 13, 2008 Bottle: Shared by beastiefan2k back at the hotel during G.A.B.F. 2008. Opaque pour with a deep khaki dense lacing head. Very pungent and sweet nose. Chocolate syrup, espresso, boozy and burnt. Slick and thick texture. Sugary sweet flavor with burnt espresso roast and chocolate liqueur. Extremely rich and hard to drink. thickfreakness (123), Austin, Texas, USA Oct 5, 2008 5/14/08. This was my end of the Spring semester celebratory beer. I can’t think of a better time to open this beer. An aggressive pour into my Duvel tulip leaves a nice lasting dark brown head. The smell is off the charts. Definitely a lot of oxidation (soy sauceish?) in there but it blends really well with the dark chocolate and roasted malt smells also get plenty of molasses. I could smell this all day. The taste is really similar to the smell and there is quite a bit of apparent alcohol still here. Tons of chocolate and roastiness as well as a pleasant lingering bitterness. This just absolutely coated my mouth and slicked over my tongue. Exceptional mouthfeel. This is a great double stout but I can’t picture ever having more than one or two but I don’t think I will have that problem as this is my only one! Enjoyed this to the very last drop. SuzyGreenberg (1067), Seattle, Washington, USA Oct 2, 2008 12 oz. bottle - thanks to drewbeerme for the trade; jet black with thin chocolate head; resinous aromas of coffee, alcohol, roasted malts; sweet and strong; a little on the hot side and a sipper, but a killer one at that; very similar to my most recent bottle of expedition; sweet and creamy, delish
