The pour is very nice - a deep, dark amber with a nice frothy tan head that leaves soapy lace. The nose was a little weaker than I had supposed... earthen roasts, for the most part. The flavor is roasted and of dry malts. The finish is particularly of toasted nuts, and dry. I like the Best Brown, as there’s nothing I haven’t liked from Bell’s thus far. After some of their other complex offerings, though, this did leave me wanting slightly. I was expecting more malt fruition as it warmed. A decent fall brew. nuplastikk (1206), Madison, Wisconsin, USA

Very well balanced, a perfect mix of the sweet nutty brown malt/yeast and mild hoppy flavors. Real depth of flavor. Great beer. LinusStick (1847), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 10, 2007 A solid brown ale from one of my favorite brewers. Aroma was somewhat weak. Could pick up some roastiness and malt. Pour was beautiful. Deep dark brown with a nice puffy 2 finger tannish head. Taste was nice and thick with roasted malt and a bit of caramel in the front, and a nice bittering hoppiness in the aftertaste. Not enough that it jumps out at you, you have to look for it. All in all a solid brown. dmtroyer (415), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

Fairly dense brown pour with an off-white head. Good caramel, loads of sweet malt with a spicey edge that I just can’t quite place (maybe corriander?) that makes me almost think Belgian. Some good carbonation, this one drinks well cold and emits the slightest touch of bitter fruit hops. Fairly persistent but overwhelmingly alcohol-laden finish. Drjohnrock (95), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 8, 2007 Sampler from bottle at Clifton Beer Fest at Fries Cafe. Brown color (duh), sweet aroma, usual sweet malt taste present but hops and nuttiness make this beer bolder than many brown ales. Those who usually don’t care for the style might like this one. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 6, 2007 My first time with this beer and it’s fairly pleasant. A nice hoppy brown that doesn’t skimp on the traditional malts, with caramel and a sharp nutty flavor in there too. Nice quaffable brown.
