The cherry flavor was pretty strong, and there was a hint of roast once you got past the cherry. It was a bit too sweet for my tastes.

Bottle, batch 8730 (9/16/08). Pours black with a small dark tan head that fades quickly. Aroma of rich roasted malt, slight roasted nuts/coffee, and bitter chocolate. Flavor is initially quite sweet with sour cherry notes. Roasty finish. Flavor is a touch medicinal, especially as you continue to drink. Solid malt backbone though. Pretty good stout but gets a little tart/medicinal at times. 7/4/7/4/15 (3.7/5)

12 oz bottle Pours a dark ruby brown with a thin reddish-brown head that quickly dissipates. Nose contains dark chocolate, sour cherries, and hints of tobacco. Sour cherry tones dominate the flavor, with hints of tobacco smoke, dark chocolate and a nice, smooth malty finish. Just a tiny hint of residual sugar is present, which keeps the cherries from being overwhelmingly tart. Mouthfeel is moderately thick with a very smooth feel. Overall, an excellent beer, and one of the best cherry-themed beers I’ve tried.

Bottle. Pours a deep ruby-brown. Has a slight head, but it doesn’t last that long. Definite aroma of cherries. Has a very cherry-bitter finish to it. It’s good but it’s a definite surprise!

Bottle. Pitch black pour, no carbonation and a had aroma of coffee and cherries. Flavor was smoky, peat, cherries and a little tart on the finish. Another nice Bells offering.

12oz bottle Batch 8870 12/10/08(Binny’s Naperville)-Pours a dark black with a small tan covering for a head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, and cherry tartness. Taste of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and some tartness. This full bodied brew is very well balanced and quite tasty. None of the flavors overpower any other. Nice job.

12 oz glass poured on tap at The Galway Tribes (Frankfort, IL). I had been sitting on this for awhile at home, but decided to save it some more and go for the tap version. Pours a very dark and near opaque pour with small brownish head. Aromas are decent roasted malt with light cherry sweetness / tartness. Very pleasing, not cloying. Taste combines tart cherries, not artificial, with nice contrast with the good roasted malts and touches of coffee in the body. Finishes with sour cherries and roasted malt on the backend. Light bittersweet chocolate and coffee mixes well with the roasted melt and leaves a touch of charred on the back end. Good contrast.
