Nice dark red orange with a finger of sawdust colored head and some small floaties. Very malty aroma, light spice. Taste is smoky peat, malt, just a touch of clove spice and a nice hoppy bitterness. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 5, 2009 Nice painting of a fir tree on the label. Quick fading, bubbly head. Nose of sweet malt and iron. Smooth on the palate with a fully hopped flavor. Pretty dry and lightly astringent, but enjoyably so. No spices. This did not really seem like a Christmas brew or a scotch ale. To me it was more like a pale ale or a bitter, and a good one. coyotehunter (551), , Michigan, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jan 5, 2009 bottle. pours a dirty orange with a thin head lacing the glass well. aroma is that of spices and malt. Tastes to me like an Amber Ale with something extra thrown in and not overfiltered. some light peat, orange peel , coriander and hops show themselves as it its awhile.

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 30, 2008 Bottle, John’s Grocery in Iowa City. Nice basic copper, just off white skim of bubbles. Warm malt with a clove phenol and a little sour bile note. Crisp carbonation bite cuts through the malt sweetness, making way for a medicinal finish. The overall impression of having a dose of the wash from a peaty whiskey mixed into an otherwise straight-up amber ale. It’s not unpleasant, but it’s a bit less of a unified experience than I usually expect from Bells. WeeHeavySD (3002), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA

Low ratings aside glad to try it. Pours orange with a bright white ring. Nose is sweet. Taste is hoppy and bitter and by means anything resembling a good scotch ale.
