| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 5, 2007 Bottle, pours a dark amber with a frothy two finger tan head that quickly dissipates, minimal lacing. Malty aroma of dark fruits, caramel, molasses, and toffee; very aromatic. Minimal carbonation, oily and full bodied with a great mouthfeel. I found this to be a pleasant surprise, but shouldn’t be too much so due to Bell’s excellent craftmanship; recommended. BustedFlat (553), Edina, Minnesota, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 5/5 | 13/20 | Mar 4, 2007 Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a mug, dark amber with very little head. Very light aroma with a touch of malt. The flavor is all malt. Very smooth. No alcohol taste apparent, which could be dangerous. A nice dopplebock, but not the best I’ve had.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 3, 2007 There’s nothing about this beer that I don’t like. Flavor is complex and balanced: malty, fruity, molasses. Maybe a little sweet for the style, but it’s damned tasty. Rich, full mouthfeel. Alcohol not present in the flavor, but I certainly noticed it a few sips in!
Overall an excellent beer that I would certainly purchase and enjoy again. theisti (1666), Leawood, Kansas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Mar 3, 2007 Bottle. Pour is brown with a slight twinge of rust to it. Decent size off white head. Aroma is caramel, malt and faint nut. Taste is nice, bigger and fuller than most dopplebocks I have had. Get the caramel, more of the nuttiness and definitely a nice big finish with almost a rainy morning taste. tytoanderso (1387), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 2, 2007 Bottle. Pours reddish brown. Intensely sweet-malt nose. Notes of toffee, caramel, toast and malt on the palate. Unimpressed with the finish: thin, only lightly malty and very short. Not Bell’s best, but not horrible. EithCubes (2146), Indiana, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 2, 2007 Updated: Oct 17, 2007Bottle. Lightly hopped aroma with light nuttiness. Malt, brown sugar, sweet with some berry and dark fruit. Slightly reddish brown body with a foamy beige head. Viscous body, loads of molasses and malt, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, sticky dark fruit, and a little toast malt. Plum and grape with a little burn from the alcohol, a little like dark rum. Overall, light sweetness with lighter bitterness. Finishes with a light prickle from carbonation and/or hops. Aftertaste has tons of malt and maple syrup, sticky rather than dry. Definitely in the Animator class, yet a tick below offerings from Sprecher and Augustiner. A well-crafted, pretty authentic take on the style, and darn tasty.
Update, same batch (7753), 8+ months later: apparently, best drunk fresh - lots of change-over into astringent, slightly grainy booze. Kind of a dirty floral caramel dominates. Man, wish I had opened this in the spring! Jvittorio4187 (255), Boardman, Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 1, 2007 Good beer. Pours a redish brown. Very little hop character. Smooth feel. The aroma was kind of weak.
