Aroma is malty of course, somewhat bold, smokey with notes of cigar and tobacco. The taste seemed a tad too bold for me, not really clean, too packed with an earthy sweet character I didn't quite enjoy, especially in the aftertaste. Palate is flawless though, oatmeal stout round and smooth. bu11zeye (5535), Frisco, Texas, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 9, 2003 Medium brown color with a nice toffee colored head and a good sweet bocky aroma. Palate is nice and oily, but has too much carbonation within. Flavor is malty and mild with a sticky finish that hides its alcohol relatively well. I expected a little more from Bells, but this is still a good doppelbock. hopscotch (5500), Vero Beach, Florida, USA

Looks like I'm going against the grain here. This was my first beer of the day, so I wasn't influenced by alcohol.
Absolutely stunning, sparkling clear ruby brew. Very small, creamy, khaki-colored head. Quicly dissipating. Thick and oily in the glass.
The aroma is rich and malty. Notes of alcohol, caramel, prune and raisins.
The flavor? MaltHeads, jump for joy! Very hearty, rich and sweet with loads of raisins, light molasses, caramel and candy sugar. Perfectly bittered for balance. Full-bodied with a super heavy, oily mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Lengthy, bittersweet finish. Excellent! Reminiscent of DFH's Raison D' Etre on tap.
Worth the trip to Kalamazoo!
