Commercial Description:
A brew that gives you either sympathy for the devil or the courage to face him. Goes especially well with your favorite lost my girl/truck/dog/trailer song.

Bottle... This beer rocks!...Pitch black ale with a small, creamy, light brown head. Decent retention. The complex aroma is a swirl of dried plum, wood, blackstrap molasses, chocolate, banana and smoky, spicy phenols. Roasted, dark fruit flavors with charred bitterness. Very little, if any, residual sweetness. Full-bodied and creamy with medium carbonation. Lengthy, smoky, bitter finish. Another world class brew from Bells! Kudos to moejuck for the bottle!

Sampled at Blacklick tasting 10/2/08: Kind of an oddball here. Very dark pour characteristic of a dubbel, maybe a bit darker. Sticky caramel ring of head, even on plasic cup. Aroma is raisin and prunes. Little bit of alcohol in the nose. Creamy roasted maltiness with the underlying Belgian yeast we’re familiar with. Finishes with just a tinge of stale cardboard. Interesting, but not my style.

[Bottle] Pours a clear dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is lots of clove, a touch of wheat, and smells a little burnt and toasted like old coffee. Moderately thin mouthfeel. Toasted flavor comes through moderately strong, clove, coffee, and leaves with a dryish, moderately bitter finish. Seems a little more like a mild stout than the yeasty, fruity dubbels that I’m used to.

This pours a very, very dark brown, pretty much black in color. I see it’s listed as a Dubbel, but I ain’t ever seen no dubbel this dark. Smell is a bit of smoky, roasty malts. Only a hint of the typical belgian yeast characteristic is there. Really difficult to put my finger on this one. You get a lot more of the Dubbel flavors, characteristics in the taste. Mouthfeel is a bit bigger as well. This is entirely different than anything I have ever had, and I kind of like it. There is a bit of dark fruit, raisin flavors. Also a bit of a cola flavor as well. Decent, full mouthfeel. Decent beer.

On the dark side of what I would expect from a dubbel. Pretty full aroma of roasted caramel, malt. A hint chocolate is there as well. Flavor is really smooth (thank you bottle conditioning). There is a rich brown sugar, yeast and caramel flavor to this one. Palate is extremely smooth up front, rich and robust, then ends with a slight bitterness. Another excellent beer from our friends at Bells.

Pours dark with brown head and has a sweet chocolate flavor ending with a more robust dark coffee ending. Delicious Dubbel!
