Syd (770), Waconia, Minnesota, USA Sep 24, 2004 Bottle pours a deep black with a big brown head with very good lace. The aroma is lactic, very roasted, and chocolate. The flavor is sweet, roasted, lactic, sort of like a beer milk shake or a coffee cooler. The palate is as thick as Canada Balsam Fir sap. Overall, very nice.
kimcgolf (677), Dacula, Georgia, USA Dec 3, 2008 Jet black pour from the bottle with a medium-thick off-white head that lingers thru mid-glass and leaves good lacing. Aroma is a pleasant mixture of caramel and chocolate malt, with a whiff of coffee. Mouthfeel is full and tingly sweet, and the taste is a carbon copy of the nose, all rounding to a nice long, somewhat warming finish.
I had read a lot of good things about this beer, and was not the least bit disappointed. Good job Bells!!!
poolboy (29), Lafayette, Indiana, USA Nov 29, 2008 A very good stout. Not as think as its imperial brother (the expedition). Still, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and perhaps some vanilla. Velvety milk-chocolate aftertaste. Definitely some creaminess on the palate. Homer321 (120), Rockledge, Florida, USA Nov 28, 2008 poured from a 12oz bottle inot a wide mouthed glass. aroma is very rich and chocolate-like. slight notes of roasted barley - but not overwhelming - which I prefer. minimal tan head that fades quickly and leaves lacing. Flavor is sweet and malty - very nice. chocolate is first as it fades, a sweetness takes over. no harsh finish, and very pleasant. palate is smooth and very digestable. overall, a beer that I would love to have year round - too bad is too darn hot in florida to drink this any time but Nov through Jan. jimmack34 (161), Ohio, USA Nov 28, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with a creamy tan head. Smells very raosty, with hints of chocolate and coffee. Tastes thick and like roasted coffee beans, smooth and chocolatey, hints of vanilla and mabe some dark fruits. Sweet and creamy smotth, with a nice dessert aftertaste. Very good. BMan1113VR (1161), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Nov 26, 2008 Bottle thanks to daknole. No batch number on the bottle. Pours with a dark brown head and a black body. Aroma of licorice, walnut brownies, florals, and milk chocolate fudge. Taste is chocolate, nuts, licorice, dust, followed by more nuts, fudge and strong anise and a light cheese taste with a bit of blueberry (or berry) chutney. Creamy mouthfeel with light bubbles.
