| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 23, 2009 Traditional stout with a little extra snap. Moderate off white head vanishes quickly to just a ring atop the dark brown body. Aroma of fresh pumpernickel toast. More or less a standard stout in character: oak, nuts, and malt stand out, but there’s the slightest sparkle of dark rye on the tongue. Some citrus notes in the finish; orange, cumquat, and mild licorice. blutt59 (2098), Dallas, Texas, USA

Flavor is nice roasted malts and bitter sweet chocolate as well. Dark roasted malts comes through as well also just touch of coffee/chocolate... Palate is smooth and creamy. Medium bodied. Amazingly drinkable. Would work well as an everyday stout. TheBeerOrg (1569), Kentucky, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 20, 2009 Nice roasty aroma, with hints of rye in the back end. It pours an opaque black with just a thin light tan head. Nice rich roasted flavors, balanced by a slight bite of rye. This is another solid beer from Bells. Guerde (699), Welcome, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 19, 2009 (bottle) Pours dark brown with a fast dissipating tan head. Aroma of burnt toast, roasted malt, a little beef jerky, and some smoke. Taste is really nice, with alternating flavors of raisin, chocolate, and roasted malt. These alternating flavors are great, with the sweet and roasty flavors continually bouncing in and out of perception. Warming gives rise to some spicy rye flavor and teriyaki beef jerky. Further warming provides a strong taste of Hostess cupcake. Finishes with some roasted malt and dry dark chocolate, and the rye shows up far into the finish, providing a lingering note of baked bread. Mouthfeel is smooth and full like all of Bell’s stouts. This is pretty solid stuff. Pawola22 (713), Kansas City, Missouri, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 18, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours a deep brown, almost black body with some red tints. Finger-width, creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a good amount of lacing. Aroma is slightly smokey with a light roast and milky chocolate. Some bready malts, toffee, and a hint of rye. Somewhat mild aroma, but nice. Flavor is similar and very well balanced. A mild roast and rich, milky chocolate up front before the rye malts become evident in the middle. Some toffee and nuts come in as well before this finishes with just a hint of dark fruits and barely a trace of sourness. Slowly dries with a subtle bitterness as a light smoke creeps in and leaves the palate with a roasty chocolate aftertaste that lasts for quite awhile. Medium body and very smooth, yet thick feeling with a creamy carbonation. Overall, a very nice, rounded stout. The rye adds a noticable difference as this stays silky, rich, and evenly roasted. Good one.
