murrayswine (101), Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jan 18, 2007 Rather underwhelming.
This beer pours a stoutlike brown. No shit eh?
The smell is like corroded batteries, white pepper, and an ashtray.
There’s a little hop bitterness as well.
The taste is sour and metalic. Rather boring beer. It’s really watery, and I cant get past the smell.
Battlekow says I’m wrong and that this beer is Awesome.
Piss on that. WeeHeavySD (2940), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jan 17, 2007 12 oz bottle via trade with demitriustown. Pours black as the fur on a panther with a head that was really dissapointing that is until it dissappeared completely leaving a vague arcapelago of residue on the top. Roasty aroma that I assume has a bit of Rye to it, but I don’t really know what rye smells like. Its tasty with a nice something extra I’m guessing is the rye. The carbonation is nice and sticks to the tongue. Overall good but not super exciting. Very easy to drink for a 6.7. beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 16, 2007 On tap at the brewery. Pours a black color with brown highlights and a ring of light brown lace on top. Good aroma of rye and roasted malt, the flavor has the same elements but they feel milder. The body is light while the carbonation is moderate. Not bad but the flavor lack some punch. SpringsLicker (2041), Tennessee, USA Jan 14, 2007 This pours with virtually no head. Dark brown that will appear black in all but the best light.
Light roast aroma.
Tangy and dry but not as much roasty depth of flavor as I would expect from what is perhaps the most dynamic Stout brewer in the country. Thinish. detroiter (958), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA Jan 13, 2007 Pours a deep dark brown mahogony black, topped by about an inch of deep tan foam. Good head retention and lacing. I can’t get over this aroma - to me it smells like Raisin Bran cereal still in the box - grain, bran, and those tiny tartly dried and subsequently sugared raisins.
Dry rye and bitter cherry pit flavor combines with a bittersweet chocolate and a roasted grain flavor. Perfect. Medium body, prevelant and silky smooth carbonation JB175 (1654), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 9, 2007 Dark, almost black pour with a small tan head. Nice roasted malt aroma with hints of rye, coffee and chocolate. Taste is an interesting roasted grain mixture, dominated by the rye - but a bit less than I expected. I just tried Bear Republic’s Hop Rod Rye DIPA and am partial to other rye DIPAs and Strong Ales so its hard to get into "lesser rye tastes". That said, I’m a big fan of everything Bells. Other tastes include a bit of coffee - almost chicory-like. The body is a bit on the thin side, which is surprising. I like this beer, but I think it would have been better to just brew some Kalamazoo Stout with a bit of rye. blank (998), Washington, Washington DC, USA Jan 9, 2007 a lot of rye, A LOT. a decent sweet stout with a very noticable rye aroma and flavor. good, but i’m not THAT much of a rye fan zsb19 (62), Villa Hills, Kentucky, USA Jan 8, 2007 Bottle - Pours deep dark brown with thin tan head that fades fairly quick. Aroma is roasted malty chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel is a little thinner than I expected, but still silky smooth. Upfront taste is bitter coffee followed by some roasty malt. Finish has a sour rye note that lingers for a bit. Overall this is an interesting stout, but probably not something I’m going to reach for on a regular basis.
