DrewTaylor (154), Michigan, USA Dec 24, 2006 Poured black with a very small brown creamy head. Aroma of coffee. Taste is of coffee, chocolate, and roasty - thick and very smooth. Slightly bitter end. Rich brew. FROTHINGSLOSH (1961), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 16, 2006 I can not think of any brewer that makes such a wide array of good and interesting stouts as this one does. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a very small brown head. The aroma was spicy , roasty and had a coffee element. The mouthfeel is fairly thick and smooth. The flavor was roasty, toasty and spicy with a peppery rye element. The finish was bitter caramel. Quite interesting. Marsiblursi (1631), Göteborg, Sweden Dec 14, 2006 (Bottle) Pours dark, dark brown. Dark sour bread and coffee beans in aroma with some cocoa. Roasted with rye-ish tones. Sour, dark rye bread in flavour with some coffee. Pretty round and a bit buttery mouthfeel. Rather thin body. orville (160), Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, USA Dec 13, 2006 Pours no head into my english pint. Has a gamey roast smell, but wow this is delicious and smooth. What better way to get your daily grains? Strange label; is that Ed Gein? GregClow (2493), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 11, 2006 Bottle from Bello Vino in Ann Arbor. Deep, rich brown colour with a very faint off-white head. Lots of roasted malt and dark rye bread notes in the aroma. Nice flavour - lots of roast & rye as predicted by the aroma, along with a bit of coffee & smoke, and a nice tartness in the finish. Very well put together, I liked this one a lot. pineypower (1076), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA Dec 8, 2006 Thanks Santa....pours out a deep brown with a small off white head. Aroma is of roasted malt and some rye. The flavor is very interesting, roasty with rye, coffee and slight fruit here and there. Little bitterness on the finish whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 6, 2006 Very dark brown body and a small creamy beige head with an oily fade. Characterful aroma of lightly roasted grain and coffee beans, plus fresh rye. Flavor of cream, chocolate, caramel, and warm spicy cinnamon rye. Semi-sweet with low roasty bitterness and a smooth, even body. This is a ridiculously drinkable bantam stout that pairs well with all manner of seafood.
jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA Dec 6, 2006 From a 12 oz. bottle with a batch number, 7235, and a short blurb on the back label, packaged on 02.09.06.
Poured a stout looking coffee black with a small foamy tan head, minimal amount of sticking.
Aromas of salt and minerals, lightly roasted coffee, a sweet fruity and a trace of smoke.
Moderate carbonation and a malty crisp, a watery slick, smooth medium-full bodied mouthfeel.
Tastes of coffee and grains, a touch of rye, a very subtle smokiness, a watery fruitiness, not much of an alcohol presence, and some sweet caramel with coffee in the finish with a lingering sweet, but watery fruitiness.
To my taste, far from the best of the usually quality Bell’s stouts, drinkable, but I only wanted one of these.
