vyvvy (2023), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA May 31, 2006 Pours dark brown, almost black. The head is dark brown and leaves very quickly. Aroma has roasted malt and cereal. The body is much lighter than expected for a stout. Light carbonation. The taste has some coffee and light chocolate notes. The dryness from the rye comes out on the finish. I wanted to like this one, but it just came off as too watery for a stout for my tastes. tomxcs (315), Golden, Colorado, USA May 25, 2006 Pours dark, dark brown with a reddish tint; pinkish-reddish-brownish head. Aromas of chocolate and earthy, piney hops. Rich, spicy, sweet-sour coffee and earthy hop flavors with a thin, fairly uncarbonated, smooth body. I’m glad I tried this one -- a good experiment by Bells. heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA May 25, 2006 Bottled. Black body with a light khaki colored head. The aroma is earthy with musty old mushrooms and some dark chocolate. There is also a note of oak. The taste is definitely the rye with some chocolate and a bit of good coffee. There is also a bit of salt in the finish with some peaches. Low carbonation, but it fits the style. An interesting stout. Panzuriel (992), Westerville, Ohio, USA May 24, 2006 rich brown liquid with very little head. Nose is medium dry, slight carmel. a little nutty malt. Body is right and full. Taste is a a subtle and delicious roasty dryness with a good malt flavor. Nice finish with just a shade of creaminess. bgburdman9 (822), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 22, 2006 12 oz bottle. Poured a very dark brown with a very little carbonation that dissapated quickly. Aroma of slight spiciness, choclate, and a little smoke. Flavor was a mild rauchbier with a little more maltiness. Was a little thin and watery in my mouth which was dissapointing and ended a little bitter. Not bad but id prefer a regular stout. rajendra82 (698), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA May 20, 2006 Received as part of BIF 33, from orbitalr0x, Bell’s Rye Stout poured out dark brown and very well carbonated. The head was four fingers thick, and occupied nearly half the pint glass. The smell was mild, and had the typical chocolate aroma typical of the stouts of this strength. The taste was a little too light for the style, with sweet, sour, and grainy flavors. Not sure if I detected much rye in here. The mouthfeel was thin and dry, and aftertaste minimal. I could not detect any alcohol at all, which made this very easy to drink. cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA May 16, 2006 via trade with Ohiodad - (7235) - Pours a very dark brown color with a small tan head that fades quickly. Aroma is kinda odd. Smells like a can of Vienna sausages. Wierd huh? Rye maybe? Has a light roasted flavor. Smooth medium body. Not bad. Thanks Scott. puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA May 11, 2006 Glad I finally got to try this one. Pitch black pour with a nice though small brown head. Aroma is strongly rye, bready, with nice stouty undertones. There is a lot of rye in the flavor, too, maybe too much so, that cover up the roastiness. Tastes a little "cold," for lack of a better term. Rich and creamy palate. I always love experimental brews like this. This one has a really unique taste.
