Travlr (698), Washington, Washington DC, USA Oct 28, 2009 On draught at RFD. Deep chestnut brown with a scant white head. Aroma of rye bread with some roasted coffee beans. Very creamy body, almost chewy like a Guinness. Very subtle flavor of dark milk chocolate at first, progressing to a dark pumpernickel, then finishing with a bitter edge. A keeper. jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 28, 2009 Dark mahogany with big, foamy brown head / Light roast coffee and chocolate nose / Medium body, chewy but slightly thin, with good balance and dry finish / Flavors of dark roast coffee, milk chocolate, and some spicy rye on the finish / Good, not one of their best. MoDog (909), Griffith, Indiana, USA Oct 27, 2009 12oz bottle (Batch 9370) served in an English pint glass. Dark brown pour with a thin, short-lived head of tan foam. Light lacing. The aroma consisted of chocolate, caramel, rye, and toasted nuts. The flavor was more rye forward, featuring a nice spiciness followed by chocolate, heavy roast, a bit of smoke, and also some caramelized sugar. Medium to full-bodied with a light amount of prickly carbonation. If you enjoy rye, there is plenty in this beer. Interesting stout...pretty good. noncaloric (601), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Oct 27, 2009 Clear dark brown pour, moderate beige head, spots,of lace. Faint nutty aroma. Full spectrum of dark malt flavors, mostly chocolate and dark fruits, a bit of toffee. Slightly sweet, offset by hops bitterness and a spicy alcohol edge. Despite the non-aroma, a very full, well harmonized flavor. Medium body, warm, zesty on the palate. beernbourbon (230), chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 27, 2009 Bottle. Pour is dark, almost reddish brown with a medium beige head. Aroma is spicy, black pepper, coffee, and mildly chocolaty. The spicy characteristics of rye come through nicely.
