| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 8, 2009 Heavy brown body, constant 1/2" dark tan head and good lacing. Peppery/spicy aroma chock full of coffee, chocolate fudge and roasted malts. There is a wonderful underlying fruitiness that comes forward after a bit. Full bodied, extremely creamy with a wonderful sweet finish and a lightly dry aftertaste. Nutty coffee with cream, mild black licorice, chocolate and hints of plum dominate the taste. Good spicy character in the back ground with a faint twang. Another top notch stout by Bells, seems like a drier and spicier version of the Kalamazoo. roder60 (1039), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 27, 2006 Pours a jet black color with a small amount of foamy tan head. Aroma is sweet molases, roasted barley, brown sugared fruit. Flavor is pretty light for the abv, creamy smooth sweet caramel mocha. Overall, i liked. shawnm213 (1035), South Bend, Indiana, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 27, 2007 Thanks to JPDipso for the spur of the moment trade at the checkout line of the liquor store. Pours an impregnable black color, a small ring of foam lines the top of the beer. Not alot of aroma on this one bits of chocolate, spicyness from the rye, my brother says some hazlenut. Good balanced flavor, some roast and the rye combine nicely. The finsh is somewhat lacking. I would like a bit more chocolate/coffee flavor but thats just me. Good brew. badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 3, 2006 this was another good one from bells, but falls a tad short compared to the rest of their stout offerings....pours black with small off-white head...aroma is full of dark chocolate and coffee hints...nice rye notes present...flavor is very similar and is remarkably smooth for a rye...palate was a bit thin; a 3/5 may even be generous jefcon (1009), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Nov 1, 2009 An extremely dry-smelling and dry-tasting stout. Some spicing, but mostly papery, roast coffee and toasted flavors. More pit fruit on the nose. Not an oppressive amount of alcohol, but enough that you notice the drying finish. An interesting beer. The use of rye is adept, but the final product just doesn’t do enough to stay within the profile of a stout. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 31, 2006 Looks like a pretty nice stout. Dark black with a diminishing white head. Pretty dark indeed. Smells interesting: spicey, almost grassy, with the usual roasted malts. There’s definitely some rye bread in there! Well, or it’s my mind playing tricks on me. The palate is a little thin and CO2 abbrasive by stout standards, but with the rye character going on, it complements the flavor to some extent. The flavor is spicy, maybe it’s the rye? There’s also something grassy, the hops are at the high end for a stout, but I really do like it. There’s a slight bittersweetness to this to go along with the roasty near chocolatey flavors. There’s a lot of complexity here--at least a lot more than I expected.
