Commercial Description:
An abundance of rye grains provide a spicy twist to otherwise traditional stout flavors. A unique approach to an entirely new style of stout.

12 oz bottle Thanks OhioDad. Deep brown-black beer with a tan head that quickly fades back. Great herbal aroma, underlying a deep rich dark chocolate nose. Chicory and light roast in the aroma. Flavour is really fantastic, dark chocolate, toast and roast. Big slick mouthfeel and a great rye spiciness. The heavy rye mintiness works very well with all of the dark chocolate. Earthy hoppiness with a hint of pine as well. I’m a huge sucker for rye and this doesn’t disappoint. Great balance, great maltiness, great beer with a touch of coffee through the finish. Awesome.

Dusty, airy, musty aroma, almost like spoiled carrots and such. Something I find common in rye beers... strange. Tastes decent, some roasted oatmeal and barley flavors, mild creaminess on the palate. Slightly sweet finish. A somewhat plain beer but doesn’t exactly taste bad.

Another solid stout from Bells, this one a nearly black, dark brown body with a slim light brown head. The aroma is a smooth, roasted barley smell with chocolate, rye seeds, and black pepper. Extra creamy mouthfeel. The flavor taskes a stronger chocolate turn with a splash of coffee added to the rich malts and rye spiciness. There’s a slight sourness in the finish along with a nutty bitterness. Very nice.

I really like the way rye gives a beer a slippery feel in the mouth. The liquid slides though and bearly gives you time to think on it. Nutty, coffee flavors. The finish is quite dry and bitter.

Black, gold tawny color with light head and average sized lacing. Great aroma with mixed sweet malt and dry rye like fresh wort and a hoppy backdrop. Flavor is very balanced and has some great chocolate & raisin parts. The rye really stands out in this beer with a great freshness. A very good stout, Bells knows how to do them well. Thanks ClarkVV!

Bottle. Poured black color with a moderate brown head that diminished slowly with small lacing. Solid roasted malt and alcohol aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Good roasted sweet malt flavor with a small spicy bitter finish. Good rye change of pace stout.

Bottle from the Beer Yard. Deep brownish pour with aroma of roasty malt, chocoff, slight fruit. Tastes on the dry side, with roasty malt, slight chocolate notes, and some coffee and pumpernickel bread notes.

A deep dark brown stout with ruby hues, and big floaties, with a thin creamy moka head. A strange concoction of coffee, metallic notes, and potted meat. In mouth, a restrained sweet chocolate, with light bitter notes, a bit buttery. Medium bodied. Tasted Dec. 2006.
