| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 24, 2006 Bottle. Poured an opaque dark brown that appeared black in the glass. Head was minimal. A strong roast scent with a subdued sweetness, the rye was evident. Nice balanced flavor of roasted malt with like the aroma, a hint of sweetness and minimal bitterness. A bit watery, but with a pleasant fizzle to this smooth brew. Tasty. Syd (909), Waconia, Minnesota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 27, 2009 Tap at Happy Gnome. Pours dark with decent head and some lace. Aroma of rye is there, along with stout roast. The flavor is sharper than other Bell’s stouts, with a nice cut for the afternoon lunch we had (pheasant tartlet). Overall, very nice in all ways. spector (906), Lancaster, Ohio, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 20, 2002 Rye beer is a style that I do not have a whole lot of experience with, but I am eager to taste. This stout is jet black in appearance with a tan head. The nose is dominated by roasted barley. The beer has a high acidity that gives this beer a unique thirst quenching quality that I find desirable. The palate is very dry with a lime like flavor that is a bit briny. The more I drink this beer the thirstier I get. Bone dry beer. Bells rye stout is very intriguing, but seems to lack in complexities to separate it from other stouts. I believe that most stout drinkers would benefit from tasting this out of the ordinary beer. I wonder what percent of the mash is rye. ogglethorp (890), Ohio, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 30, 2007 On tap. Pours dark dark brown, some light does make it through. Aroma is roasted malt, some chocolate notes, rye. Flavor is slightly smokey, some molasses perhaps, cocoa, roasted malt. Palate is medium bodied, medium to ligh carbonation, finishes bitter. Yhis is not one of my favorite stouts from Bells. Still a fairly solid brew though. P-tor44 (886), Anchorage, Alaska, USA
