Commercial Description:
An abundance of rye grains provide a spicy twist to otherwise traditional stout flavors. A unique approach to an entirely new style of stout.

Bottle thanks to jgd0608, thanks man. Poured a brown color with a thin beige head that faded to a ring. Aroma of light rye, some roasted malt, a bit of smoke and some chocolate. Smooth, lightly sweet entry with some light chocolate with some hints of rye with some undertones of roast a smoke. Finishes smooth with a light chocolate aftertaste. Low carbonation, smooth but a bit thin on the palate. Considering how old this was, it held up pretty dang well for a regular stout. Thanks jgd!

12 oz bottle. Poured a very dark brown with a very little carbonation that dissapated quickly. Aroma of slight spiciness, choclate, and a little smoke. Flavor was a mild rauchbier with a little more maltiness. Was a little thin and watery in my mouth which was dissapointing and ended a little bitter. Not bad but id prefer a regular stout.

Distinctive from other Bells beers...especially their stouts, which often seem to have a strong coffee flavor.

Before giving my opinion I have to offer my disclaimer: I hate rye with a passion - or it hates me. If ever there is a single rye seed in a proverbial mountain of spice, I can pick it out. I was predestined to hate rye. - This stout did not give me any reaction I have thusfar described. It smelled heavily grainy and dry, but not necessarily of rye. The taste was very similar although VERY bitter. Overall, this was just thin, dry, and slightly unpleasant...especially considering the brewery. I"m not an asshole am I?

355 mL. Pours a muddy, deep brown with a fairly large, fizzy, short-lived, dark tan cap. No lacing. Aroma is rye toast, toasted grains, bran cereal, coffee. A bit harsh actually. Taste is quite nice with lots of rich, toasted oatmeal, rye bread, semisweet chocolate. Oily mouthfeel. This is not bad, but it is sort of confusing. The alcohol eventually takes taking command of this beer and it loses it bitter, spicy edge and just becomes a bit too heavy and roasty.

pitch black with initially thick, but almost instantaneously disappearing white head. dark malts to the nose. some hop bitterness followed by some medium crystal malt sweetness followed by some dark malt, that seems to be more of a black patent than a roasted flavor, maybe a little english hop flavor before some yeasty esters, then a dry finish. interesting brew, a little spice from the rye, but not overwhelming. nice stout, alcohol well hidden

I kind of expected this one to be lighter in colour, but it poured a brown so dark I couldn’t catch any light through the glass. There was a fizzy soda like head that gave way to nothing but a glass like reflective almost black pool in my glass. Some kind of roast aroma, not coffee like, but what I would guess is the rye. There is a sense of light breadyness while sniffing around also. Interesting flavour that wasn’t all that stout like, I felt. Definate note of spice, with a bias of rye flavours, again kind of like bread, maybe some rye toast. Thie body was a bit thin. I’ve been trying to get some of this for a while, and I must say I’m a bit dissapointed. The flavours are diverse, but uninteresting and it lacks the body and aroma I’ve come to love in stouts.

On draught at RFD. Deep chestnut brown with a scant white head. Aroma of rye bread with some roasted coffee beans. Very creamy body, almost chewy like a Guinness. Very subtle flavor of dark milk chocolate at first, progressing to a dark pumpernickel, then finishing with a bitter edge. A keeper.
