Strong notes of coffee in the finish, moderate bitterness and quite smooth. Would like it a little thicker though. pivo (2535), Germany

Aroma is sweet molases, roasted barley, brown sugared fruit. Flavor is pretty light for the abv, creamy smooth sweet caramel mocha. Overall, i liked. elnadeau (786), Laguna Niguel, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 16, 2003 Dark dark, with a glint of ruby at the bottom when held up. Nice tan lacing head. Smells of toasted coffee and malt. This brewery knows how to do stout very well - this version nicely blends in rye to create a very interesting dark, sweet complex brew. Excellent balance and finish. bluemeow76 (693), Lewis Center, Ohio, USA

Opaque body with minimal, tan head.
Very little aroma but that may have been due to the guy sitting next to me at the bar eating hot wings.
Dry, crisp stout. The rye has a definite presence in the mouth.
Palate cleansing.
Very smooth going down and was served at cellar temp too!
I was happy to see this on tap so I could try it, very expensive 6-packs.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 9, 2007 Dark, almost black pour with a small tan head. Nice roasted malt aroma with hints of rye, coffee and chocolate. Taste is an interesting roasted grain mixture, dominated by the rye - but a bit less than I expected. I just tried Bear Republic’s Hop Rod Rye DIPA and am partial to other rye DIPAs and Strong Ales so its hard to get into "lesser rye tastes". That said, I’m a big fan of everything Bells. Other tastes include a bit of coffee - almost chicory-like. The body is a bit on the thin side, which is surprising. I like this beer, but I think it would have been better to just brew some Kalamazoo Stout with a bit of rye.
