Aroma is sweet molases, roasted barley, brown sugared fruit. Flavor is pretty light for the abv, creamy smooth sweet caramel mocha. Overall, i liked. elnadeau (786), Laguna Niguel, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 16, 2003 Dark dark, with a glint of ruby at the bottom when held up. Nice tan lacing head. Smells of toasted coffee and malt. This brewery knows how to do stout very well - this version nicely blends in rye to create a very interesting dark, sweet complex brew. Excellent balance and finish. JB175 (1664), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 9, 2007 Dark, almost black pour with a small tan head. Nice roasted malt aroma with hints of rye, coffee and chocolate. Taste is an interesting roasted grain mixture, dominated by the rye - but a bit less than I expected. I just tried Bear Republic’s Hop Rod Rye DIPA and am partial to other rye DIPAs and Strong Ales so its hard to get into "lesser rye tastes". That said, I’m a big fan of everything Bells. Other tastes include a bit of coffee - almost chicory-like. The body is a bit on the thin side, which is surprising. I like this beer, but I think it would have been better to just brew some Kalamazoo Stout with a bit of rye. hombrepalo (780), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Flavor is nice roasted malts and bitter sweet chocolate as well. Dark roasted malts comes through as well also just touch of coffee/chocolate... Palate is smooth and creamy. Medium bodied. Amazingly drinkable. Would work well as an everyday stout. matt7215 (995), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 16, 2009 12 oz bottle, batch 9399. Dark brown with a light tan head, bits of lacing. Aroma bready malt, chocolate, roast, slight hints of smoke, a little rye. Rye comes through in the flavor more than the aroma. Flavor is rich, chocolate, rye, pumpernickel bread, some roast coffee, caramel, touches of dark fruit, some grainy malt, a bit of sweet dipping in toward the finish, spicy rye and a nice touch of bitterness to balance. Finishes fairly dry with a nice roundness from the spicy rye. A light drinkable stout with a nice balance of chocolate and rye. j12601 (1340), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA
