Dark black pour with a big frothy brown head. Wonderful rye grain aroma. The aroma was inviting. The taste was the same rye goodness that you enjoy in the aroma. It had great lacing. I loved this beer. Syd (911), Waconia, Minnesota, USA

Aroma of rye is there, along with stout roast. The flavor is sharper than other Bell’s stouts, with a nice cut for the afternoon lunch we had (pheasant tartlet). Overall, very nice in all ways. piscator34 (1136), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Apr 5, 2006 Bottled sample. Almost black in colour with medium carbonation. Malty aroma with suggestions of coffee, milk chocolate, molasses and berry fruit. Flavor wise, the milk chocolate aspect becomes dominant, but some and spicy rye notes also become aparent along with other toasted grain nuances. Huge mouthfeel to this one. Very enjoyable, but perhaps a shade less forcefull than the Kalamazoo stout. MIBRomeo (1966), Wisconsin, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 1, 2006 Pours a deep, dark, burgundy/brown with a fluffy tan head that collapses quickly. Bitter aroma with prominent rye above well-roasted malts and burnt coffee. Thinly syruped mouthfeel carries a bittersweet flavor. Light carbonation adds a lift to the seriousness of the bitter character. Worth further investigation.
