An abundance of rye grains provide a spicy twist to otherwise traditional stout flavors. A unique approach to an entirely new style of stout.

Pours black thin tan head. Great sweet chocolate flavor, followed by the roasted barley, slight coffee, but mainly a great sweet milk chocolate taste, great beer.

Pours a deep, dark, burgundy/brown with a fluffy tan head that collapses quickly. Bitter aroma with prominent rye above well-roasted malts and burnt coffee. Thinly syruped mouthfeel carries a bittersweet flavor. Light carbonation adds a lift to the seriousness of the bitter character. Worth further investigation.

Bottle poured a clear deep dak brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of bitter chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, rye and light vanilla. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of dark chocolate, roasted malt, rye, vanilla and light coffee with a smooth lingering roasty chocolatey finish.

2002, consumed summer ’07 Dark brown body with samll whispy tan head. The aroma is milk chocolate, light oxidation, rye and berries. The flavor is milk chocolate, toffee, light cherry, lightly spicey rye and a touch of sherry. Medium body is very soft with light carbonation. This has held up very well. 9/3/8/4/16 4.0

Re-release versionBlack body with small tan head. Quickly fading. The aroma is freshly roasted rye bread, chocolate, molases and a touch of espresso. The flavor is rich and roasted, lots of rye, molases, a bit of smoke, chocolate. The finish is bitter and slightly acidic, mouthfeel is thick and creamy, though carbonation is a touch too high. 8/4/8/4/15 3.9

Cloudy dark brown with a large tan quickly dissolving crown. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, rye and a touch of peat. Taste of rye, chocolate and roasted sweet malt. Smooth with low bitterness. Sweetens up a bit as it warms. The rye is a nice addition, I like this one.

Pours a rich black/brown with thin to no head. Aroma is strong with roasted malts. Notes of rye, burnt malts, dark fruits, and bitter chocolate stand out. On the palate it is chewy. The flavor really brings out the burnt malts and it finishes rather dry. I was vey impressed with this beer.

On draught at RFD. Deep chestnut brown with a scant white head. Aroma of rye bread with some roasted coffee beans. Very creamy body, almost chewy like a Guinness. Very subtle flavor of dark milk chocolate at first, progressing to a dark pumpernickel, then finishing with a bitter edge. A keeper.
