Lots of bread and earth. Nutty, rye, caramel flavors. Almost like pumpernickel bread. A bit of smoke towards the end. Medium mouthfeel. Excellent

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 29, 2009 12oz. bottle served in a shaker pint. Batch 9399. Bottle conditioned. Poured a dark brown/black with a thin tan head. Chocolate malt and a little coffee in the aroma. Medium bodied with a rich and creamy mouthfeel. More chocolate malt in the flavor, a bit of malt sweetness. Long dry malty finish with lingering flavor of chocolate (again). Interesting beer, almost to the cream stout side, not a lot of roasted barley flavor. RCL (1473), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Nov 27, 2009 Dark roast and rye aroma, like a glass of pumpernickel. Tastes like a glass full of pumpernickel too, just a tiny hint of acidity and plenty of prickly rye spiciness. Very tasty. Syd (898), Waconia, Minnesota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 27, 2009 Tap at Happy Gnome. Pours dark with decent head and some lace. Aroma of rye is there, along with stout roast. The flavor is sharper than other Bell’s stouts, with a nice cut for the afternoon lunch we had (pheasant tartlet). Overall, very nice in all ways. dchmela (1430), Orlando, Florida, USA

Spicy, smoky, chocolate and rye aroma with a touch of hops. Smooth roasted grain, cocoa, spicy rye taste with a touch of smoke. Outstanding brew. scraff (1942), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 25, 2009 Black, light tan creamy head. Soft roasty cocoa cream and coffee aromas warm to lighter notes of earthed mushroom and black bread. Upfront roasted choco-cream flavors are nicely balanced with a light spicy rye and dark fruity tone from start to finish. Medium bodied, fluffy carbonation, bittersweet finish. Good, but I’ll stick to the Bell’s mainstream for my stout fix… hershiser2 (914), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 25, 2009 Bottle. Pours brown with a small head. Raisens and sweet malts in the nose. It’s a sweet stout with some sweet maltiness and hint of grass. ManvsCity (95), Redmond, Washington, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 23, 2009 Traditional stout with a little extra snap. Moderate off white head vanishes quickly to just a ring atop the dark brown body. Aroma of fresh pumpernickel toast. More or less a standard stout in character: oak, nuts, and malt stand out, but there’s the slightest sparkle of dark rye on the tongue. Some citrus notes in the finish; orange, cumquat, and mild licorice. blutt59 (2107), Dallas, Texas, USA
