Commercial Description:
An abundance of rye grains provide a spicy twist to otherwise traditional stout flavors. A unique approach to an entirely new style of stout.

[Bottle] bonused by Sprinkle. Thanks Mike! Pours a mostly clear deep brown with a small and diminishing tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, some dry cocoa, a hint of saltiness, and I really can’t detect a whole lot of rye on the nose. The flavor, though, definitely has the rye present, but on the back burner compared with the dark roast coffee and malts. Medium mouthfeel and ample carbonation despite the lack of a head. Another tasty and well balanced beer from Bells.

I’d like this to have a higher overall rating than a 3.5, because I do think it’s better than that. But, not much aroma, thin head that receded quickly. Sweet slightly thick flavor, not sure quite where the rye kicks in but it’s not your traditional roasty flavor. Pretty darn decent.

Draft at redlight redlight. One of the best out of Bell’s line of unusual stouts. Pours a dark translucent brown. Warm nose with lots of rye and dark roasted malts. Smooth, very drinkable. Fairly traditional (though solid) stout with some delightful rye flavors improving everything. Only criticism is that it is a little thin. Still a very good beer.

Draft pint at Taphouse. Moderate lacing. This drinks with a silky mouthfeel that’s quite unique. Bells makes some stellar stouts but this one, while pleasant enough, fails to stand out. But maybe that’s the point. (#3770, 12/14/2009).

Appearance: Pours a dark brown with a small white ring of fiz at the top. Aroma: Slightly smokey roasty rye malt and old musty books found in a damp basement. Taste: Burnt and roasted malt. Finishes like cold black coffee. Mouthfeel: Low carbonation and full bodied. Overall: I liked this beer, but wouldn’t drink it by itself again. I would enjoy it much more with a hearty meal. It is very dry, so it doesn’t have to be paired with dessert.

draft @ redlight redlight. Chocolatey aromas with hints of smoke with a nice sweetness. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Very smooth body, silky, spicy rye notes with sweet coffee and bitter chocolate with notes of creamy vanilla. Extremely drinkable!

Pours a rich black/brown with thin to no head. Aroma is strong with roasted malts. Notes of rye, burnt malts, dark fruits, and bitter chocolate stand out. On the palate it is chewy. The flavor really brings out the burnt malts and it finishes rather dry. I was vey impressed with this beer.

12 oz bottle batch 9370 thanks 17thfloor for sharing. Pours nearly black with a small but creamy light tan head. Aroma is super heavy rye, surprisingly smoky and a bit peaty, roasted nuts, some chocolate and coffee beans. Flavor again, very smoky some and roasted nut forward. Dark chocolate and bits of dark fruit come out towards the middle and give way to a strangely boring finish, lightly bitter coffee and roasty. Medium to full body and a light fizzy carbonation. Sadly flat in the finish and all around alright. Not bad, just decent.
