CaptainCougar (4687), Rockville, Maryland, USA Aug 9, 2008 On tap at Maduro, pre-GTMW ’08: Pours a nearly opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a thin-lacing wispy tan head. Aroma of lightly sweet dark carramel malts and some mild, earthy smoke. Body is a little thinner than I expected, but quite drinkable with some dark chocolate and roasty smoked notes before a semi-dry finish. Decent smoked stout, but could use a little more body and smoke character. bu11zeye (3887), Frisco, Texas, USA Oct 7, 2008 (Draught) Pours a dark brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of caramel malt, light smoke, roastiness, and chocolate. Flavor of roasted malt, smoke, chocolate, and toasted grain with a bitter coffee finish. BBB63 (3843), La Porte, Indiana, USA Apr 19, 2008 Tap at Eccentric Cafe: Deep brown hue with a creamy tan head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of moderate meaty smoke, coffee, chocolate, walnut, herbal hops, and wet grains. The taste has a nice malty character balanced by some acidity and hop bitterness. Herbal and earthy in midsection before the very slight smoky finish. The mouth feel is lively and refreshing with a dry ashy finish. Not an overpowering smoked beer at all (perhaps too light handed for me) and it should be listed as stout. As a stout it is okay and worth a try. Ughsmash (3148), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Aug 10, 2008 On tap at Maduro. Poured lighter black with a short-lived cap of deep tan head. The aroma was dry and chocolatey with well-integrated smoked malts.. somewhat restrained but nice. The flavor had dry-roasted chocolate and coffee at the core with toasty smoked malts extending outward.. dry finish picked up an unexpected dose of sourness (not necessarily bad). Dry and toasty on the palate with nice smoky integration.. tasty.
