fiver29 (305), Strongsville, Ohio, USA Jun 6, 2008 On tap pours black with a light tan head. Has some aroma of malts and little to no smoke on the nose. Smoke flavor is very subtle. and really subdued. Just an ok brew.
shintriad (687), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 25, 2008 Lovely stuff. Very smooth, very black, lacy, the smokiness subtle among roasted flavours and dark chocolate. Lasting bitter aftertaste. kp (6200), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Aug 18, 2008 Date: 08/08/2008

1FastSTi (2388), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA Aug 12, 2008 Tap. Pours to a deep black body with a thin rocky tan head. The aroma is strong smoke and deeply roasted black malts. The flavor is strong deeply charred black malt and a nicely balanced smoked malts. More of a stout with subtle smoking than a strong rauchmalt and subtle charring. Nice smoked lightly charred palate. pnista (888), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Aug 11, 2008 On tap at Madura, pre Great Taste ’08. Unlike any other Bell’s stout. Dark dark brown to black, with a bit of a quickly disappearing head. Big roast, with a strongly smokey aspect. Not peaty, a bit bacony, but much more acidic and woodchippy in the nose. The mouth isn’t huge and thick, but it’s certainly not thin. The flavor is very acidity, very sharp, and the smoke only makes this aspect stick out more. The flavors are almost fruity, but much more roasty acidity than anything else. Brigadier (887), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Aug 11, 2008 On tap at Maduro’s Bell event
While lacking the spectacle of last year’s ridiculous taplist there were still a few interesting things being tapped this year. The best was a five year old Expedition stout which just goes to prove how great a beer it is. Otherwise the only one I tried was this. Expecting something with a bit more smoke it was a little bit of a disappointment. Good as a stout it either needs more smokiness or a new name.
Aroma / Appearance - The thin spotty head resolved itself at the top of an almost full pint. Underneath was a black body that was fluid and left little evidence along the sides as I drank it. Smoky chocolate reminded me of the smell of an empty cigar box filled with fruit.
Flavor / Palate - The slight bitterness gave only a trace of smoke like the kind you may find in a freshly dumped ash tray. Dark chocolate formed a rich conclusion which left me refreshed. The dry finish was well done. Easy to drink my only real problem was that it did not feel smoked at all.
