Commercial Description:
This deep mahogany Euro-style lager has a nice balance of malts and hops, which lend to the full-flavored body and mild aroma. It has a pleasantly malt-fruity palate, with touches of chocolate, and some hoppy bitterness coming through at the end. The dark beer was rated as "One of the Top 100 Beers in the World" by Wine Enthusiast magazine, won the Silver Medal in the 1993 Great American Beer Festival and the Silver Medal in the 2002 World Beer Championships.

Dark malt aromas at the fore, but weak, with notes of black tea and metal. Purplish amber color, small head. Under carbonated flattish palate, weak caramel malts, virtually no hops. Better than their red, but barely.

12 oz bottle. Looks like I poured myself a diet soda with less head. Aroma is nothing special and the flavor is a little bit of caramel and kinda smoky. Overall thin and pretty weak.

Served as a weak, chestnut brown with a slim head and wet lace. Nothing special in the aroma with weak malts and late aclohol. Light nuttiness in flavor but overall thin and (you guessed it) weak. Nothing adverse but nothing to get excited about. Performs as a mediocre Dunkel.

On tap, it’s not that bad. Nice aorma and I do like the dark brown color. Not as hoppy as I’d like but it does have apretty decent taste. No aftertaste. I’m partial to beer like this from my college days in the 1960s when we’d go to Shakey’s Pizza and drink incredible quanitites of their dark beer.

Dark Brown Coloring with White Skin. Rich Malty Aroma. Prune...Rich Sweet Malty Mouthfeel...Bit Tart Towards the End as Well.

Deep auburn/cola color. Sweet textures. Thin body. Some hops in there. Malt, caramel flavors. Actually, I think that the elements are here for a pretty good beer, but the thin palate really holds it back from being more than it is: just a watered down beer.

This brew actually looks quite nice. A deep reddish brown clear body with a thick rocky khaki head that leaves lots of excellent lacing and disapates slowly. The aroma has some "manufactured" qualities. Generic lager like characteristics. Almost a generic vegetable aroma. The flavor is malty with a metallic like feel and sweetness. Plums. Not horrible. Just not what I want in a beer. The palate is weak, slick medium bodied and metallic.

I had this at the brewery early fall. I just found a paper with my ratings on it. This had a nice brownish head on top of a dark brown beer. Slightly thick and malty. Beer is always better at the brewery.
