Commercial Description:
This deep mahogany Euro-style lager has a nice balance of malts and hops, which lend to the full-flavored body and mild aroma. It has a pleasantly malt-fruity palate, with touches of chocolate, and some hoppy bitterness coming through at the end. The dark beer was rated as "One of the Top 100 Beers in the World" by Wine Enthusiast magazine, won the Silver Medal in the 1993 Great American Beer Festival and the Silver Medal in the 2002 World Beer Championships.

Something to bring to a gathering where people are going to guzzle your contribution without attention to its characteristics but something that you can tolerate over their BMC. Chestnut colored with a vanishing head. Requires you to strain for any nose but it does have notes of caramel and malt. Thin and watery, without any depth. Not recommended.

Cola colored with a short-lived thin white head. Light carbonation and a thin mouthfeel. Malty, fairly clean lager aroma. Low hop bitterness with some sweet caramel in the background and no hop flavor. Really not much going on, surely not a Vienna lager. Easily drinkable and low price which I beleive are the biggest redeeming qualities of Berghoff beers.

Dark malty aroma, clear dark brown color without a real head to speak of. malty/watery flavor nothing really to brag about, doesn’t really strike me as a vienna as much as an average american dark. drinkable, but nothing real exceptional, alcohol flavor really comes through as it warms. drank head to head with schell dark, and neither are real fantastic beers. no clear winner

Pours a medium brown with almost no head. A little aroma of malt. Flavor is malty with choclate and coffee undertones. Somewhat thin palate. Overall a decent beer.

Medium-dark brown with a slight amber hue. Average sized off-white head. Aroma has a light nutty malt thing going on. Lightness continues into the flavor, though, it isn’t bad per say. Its a watery dark lager. Nutty. Meh.

Very thin cola colored sample from bottle. Thin soury, nutty taste, not much to speak of. Light on malt and really no "hoppy bitterness" at the finish like they brag about. Weak, watered down lager.

This is the one to drink when eating sauer bratten with potato pancakes at The Berghoff in downtown Chicago. Granted, when compared to other brews in this class, it falls short. It has a deep brown color with a mild, roasty aroma... but little lasting head. It’s got a fairly smooth, caramelly-chocolate flavor... but seems somewhat watered down. Still, it goes great with a traditional German meal.
