Commercial Description:
This deep mahogany Euro-style lager has a nice balance of malts and hops, which lend to the full-flavored body and mild aroma. It has a pleasantly malt-fruity palate, with touches of chocolate, and some hoppy bitterness coming through at the end. The dark beer was rated as "One of the Top 100 Beers in the World" by Wine Enthusiast magazine, won the Silver Medal in the 1993 Great American Beer Festival and the Silver Medal in the 2002 World Beer Championships.

12oz twist-off bottle. Berghoff Sundown Dark. Brown color, bubbly tan head. Aroma of toasted malt. Malted milk. Flavor is a light toasted malts. Woody hops. Nice toast flavors left on the palate. It’s OK.

33 cl bottle, Fargo, ND, USA via Madison. Cola coloured, similar aroma. Artificially sweet, syrupy taste. Better as it’s drunk, less jarring and sweet.

Bottle. This one’s over 6 months old, actually... Been in a cold fridge, though, and it seems to have held up well. A dark brown with a tinge of red. Small head, a little lacing. Aroma contains sweet malt, honey, molasses, raisin, and a little hint of candy-like sugar. Toasty and sweet malt lead into chocolate, followed by a finish of coffee and nuts. Pretty good beer, honestly. I had it out of a cold fridge, and I’d say 40-45F is probably optimal for this one. Refreshing.

Bottle. A deep reddish brown color pour with two fingers of light tan foamy head , leaving some spotty lacing , light to medium carbonation . Aroma is nice ,some roasty malt , molasses , brown sugar and some faint hops . Flavor is lightly sweet , good roast , malty , a light hop bitterness , with just a bit of ripe fruit . Smooth ,clean mouthfeel , full body for the style . Very sessionable . I had never heard of this brewery , so I was not expecting much , this was very good and way beyyer than expected . Will buy again.

This had better be genuinely dark! Pours with a small tight fizzy head with a dark amber brownish color that does not seem contrived, although I wouldn’t go out of my way to call it genuine. Aroma is lightly fruity with some roastiness, but generally it’s a pretty weak aroma. Flavors of chocolate and very weak coffee complimented nicely with some raisin and toast.

Pours clearish brown with a small off white head. Aroma is very sweet malt, nutty and toasty with some chocolate and a lot of caramel. Flavor starts sweet with lots of caramel and a candy like presence. Gains a metallic character along with some nuts and a slightly bitter edge. The metallic note resonates through the finish though, overwhelming any other flavor component. Medium body and a slightly soda like carbonation. Very sweet all around, very much like a nut brown ale but even sweeter

sundown dark... amber tinted cola brown with a greyish white head. the nose is mostly metallic which never goes away... followed by malt, molasses, black raisins and an odd yeastiness. the entire time i am drinking this i notice a very strange sweetness from the malt... it is unlike anything i’ve had before and very hard to describe... the flavor mirrors the aroma with some dry spiciness and acidity on the finish. light to medium bodied with prickly carbonation. a weird residue is left on the palate which goes back to my earlier statement... this gets really hard to drink as it warms
