Pours a dark cola brown brew with a fast dissolving off-white head. Aroma of a caramel malt with some flowery hops toffee, and even a touch of smoke. Taste is medium body, light carbonation, with a caramel and dark fruit character flavor. Finish is smooth, creamy with a light caramel malt aftertaste. Very little bitterness. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 1/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 29, 2007 Had this on tap at the Cafe in O’Hare while laying over for a connection to Columbus. By the way, the bartender’s hot! Very nice nose of deep caramel notes, dried fruit and berries. The brew is a sparkling copper. The frothy bone colored head is mostly diminishing and leaves no lace. The balanced start is lightly acidic, the middle and long finish are both floral. The medium creamy body is lively with a clean feel to the finish. While I was drinking this one, I overheard the bartender tell a guy who asked for Yeunglings that Berghoff is the second oldest brewer in North America. I wonder if that is true? prosqtor (408), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 5, 2007 I guess I liked this more than most people on here. Pours from the bottle with a substantial foamy head that disappears rather quickly. Color is that of cola, with a slightly transparent dark red appearance. Aroma is malts and some fruit, and flavor is smoky malt with a touch of hop bitterness at the end. Unfortunately Berghoff makes people think this is going to be a Schwarzbier by naming it "Dark Beer," but it’s more like a Marzen, without all the caramel flavor. Not bad at all, and easy to drink. goldtwins (4086), Nesconset, New York, USA

| 2.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 7/20 | Sep 3, 2007 12 0z. bottle. Pours the same color and body as cola. the head less bubbly though. smells sweet with faint wild flower. is very light bodied similar to the that of last runnings of a dark lager with a floral spiciness that is syrupy like. so so in my opinion. sorry kp (8500), Woodstock, Georgia, USA
